The Bottom Line:  If you are looking for excellent Radar/Laser detection in a remote package for under $600... this is it!
I owned an Escort radar detector for more than 10 years that only picked up X/K bands but no laser. I recently purchased a Bel 936 for my wife's car with the idea that I wanted to put a remote radar/laser detector system in my truck.

The Bel 936 was very impressive, it saved me several times on a 3000 mi journey we took over the holidays. This was my first experience with a Bel. I had already made up my mind that I would buy the Bel Vector LR remote system for my truck when I came across several articles about the Escort SRX and SR1. Having happily owned an Escort for so many years prompted me to investigate further.

The price range of the SRX ($1500), and the fact that you need a dealer to install it, completely turned me off. But in looking at the SR1 I found that you could buy one for between $450 and $550 (self-installed).

I found that the positioning of the Escort SR1's eight laser sensors diodes, four in the front, four in rear, were far superior to that of the Bel Vector LR. Laser is usually fired at either the vehicles reflective license plate or a head lamp assembly. Since the lasers are fired so low on the vehicle, the Escorts grill or bumper mounted remote units have earlier detection when compared to the positioning of a windshield mounted laser sensor like the Bel Vector LR.

I am a very technical person that is experienced with electronics and wiring. The install took three hours and I don't recommend a person with no experience to attempt the install. It required drilling and mounting the front sensor unit behind my trucks grill (plenty of room behind the grill of my 2002 Dodge Ram 1500). Drilling a hole through the firewall into the interior. Routing and dressing the wires from the front and rear of the vehicle to a central location where all the connections conveniently plug into a hub with RJ phone style connectors.

The display is very small and bright it can be installed in any suitable location on your dashboard or center console. The display will auto adjust its brightness based on the ambient light in the vehicle. The alerts are clear and concise. It has automute and auto City/Highway features.

I find it very easy to use. I like that it's hidden from view so I do not have to mess with a dashboard unit every time I park my car in public. Most important of all I have found it's radar detection capabilities are on par with the best of them and the laser detection easily beats them all. I wish I could have afforded the SRX with it's Laser jamming/shifting technology, but the SR1 will more than do.
