More than Point and Shoot

Pros great ergonomics, fully functional features
Cons No 200mm zoom available
Recommended it? Yes
I have long been the fully manual SLR user that would never expect any point and shoot product to capture depth, detail, lighting effects.

It wasn't until a family member was going on a European vacation that the need arose for a new camera. The quest began by checking for a total setup on ebay.com. This proved to be tedious and each time a good camera was listed and a bid entered the bids kept going higher. Plainly, it made no sense to pay almost the price of a new camera for a used one that you knew nothing about, ie, condition, usage, functionality.

Letting the fingers do the walking only calloused the fingers so upon the trusty Moto-Guzzi and wind we rode to the mall.

Previous encounters with Ritz Camera stores brought me back.

If you have not been to a camera store lately you will be dizzied by the offerings. And if deciding on which camera is not hard enough, the rest of the test involves rebate, developing, phone card, framing offers.

The choice for me was between the Nikon 90QD Zoom and the Fuji 290S Zoom. The two cameras are, essentially, feature for feature the same camera. (See product pages)

Here is the payoff for going to the camera store: The functions being the same it comes down to execution. The Fuji was slightly more money than the Nikon, but when you hold the Fuji and look through the view finder it is clear/more open, with a broader perspective. The controls are designed for ease of use, which allows the user time to be more creative.

It has a motor driven winder and loader that will actually allow you to remove the film for a partial process if you absolutely need a shot you just took. For self portraits the Fuji also offered a remote which the Nikon did not have. I did not see any mention of it on the product page either but this is a nice feature instead of touch and run.

The camera has been to Europe and back and performed wonderfully. The pictures are superb, especially those taken with the auto flash. The photographer using this camera was a novice and the resulting photos were equal in quality to shots that years of training produces with a manual SLR. I am very impressed and I am now considering carrying it with me in place of, not....

So in concluding, I enthusiastically would recommend this camera to anyone that prefers a 35mm format and does not want to take shots that have to be retouched or apologized for.
