Best thing I've done to clean my office!

Pros Fast, easy to use, and works very well!
Cons Occasional paper jam, but only where you would expect it (difficult paper, sticky, etc.)
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Highly recommended for archiving stacks of papers. This product really works well.
I have been waiting for a scanner that works with Macintosh to allow easy archiving of my continually growing stacks and files of papers that I couldn't possibly throw away. I actually thought that Epson, HP, Microtek, Canon or some other established Mac compatible scanner manufacturer would make this product.
I saw the Fujitsu ad in the last Macworld, and decided to take the leap and try it.

It is absolutely what I had been hoping for. The scanner is smaller than I anticipated, not taking up much space on the shelf (folded.) Open, the upright paper feed and front receiving tray add a little size to it. Actually, it doesn't look very impressive in appearance. It works great however.

I connected the USB cable directly into the back of my Powermac G5 (dual 2.7) after installing the Scansnap utility and Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Standard that comes with the scanner.

All I need to do now is to put a stack of papers into the scanner and push the start button. It scans both sides in one pass. Each scan job generates a single PDF file. If I scan 10 double sided sheets, there will be a 20 page PDF file. The scanner or utility automatically eliminates blank pages (i.e. the back side of a single sided page.) All I then need to do is to rename the file and save into the desired location. The utility actually automatically stores the initial copy into the pictures folder with the date and time scanned as the name.

The quality of the scans are really good. For color scans, the scanner utility does not allow manual control of darker or lighter, but it does a good job automatically. I have set the speed of scan and compression each to the middle setting, but get scans that are fast and very legible even with fairly small text. The quality is good enough that I have no qualms about throwing away the originals. Granted, I will keep original pages of really critical things such as tax returns, etc.

Paper handling is good. It handles thick and thin sheets of paper fairly well, I assume due to the relatively straight through and short paper path. I have gotten an occasional paper jam due to paper sticking together where the staple holes got caught. The scanner utility immediately gives a warning, and it is very easy to clear the jam and resume or cancel the scan job. If two sheets accidentally feed through, the utility warns that two sheets fed through, shows the last successsfully scanned page, and makes it easy to reload and continue the job at the right page. This thing handles paper much better than my Brother MFC scanner copier fax with a 180 degree bend in the paper path.

The speed and EASE OF USE of this scanner are really what is amazing. I am guessing that compared to putting single sheets of paper in a flatbed scanner and manually scanning, I am working hundreds of times faster. Previously, archiving digitally was exhausting, now it really is EASY!!!

Paperless office, here I come!

I am updating this review on Dec 10, 2006. I just noticed that somehow this review got moved over to the HP LJ 5m printer. This review was originally written for the Fujitsu ScanSnap FI-5110EOXM Macintosh compatible scanner.
