GO PAPERLESS NOW! Fujitsu ScanSnap S500
Pros
Compact size, easy to use software, fast scans, piles of paper quickly become PDFs
Cons
No Windows Vista drivers, not for scanning photos!, no TWAIN drivers
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Small, Compact, Easy to use, fast, simple, reliable and well designed! If you want to go paperless at an affordable price, this is the machine I recommend!
I have owned my SCANSNAP for 3 months now and absolutely love it. It is easy to use and never needs any tweaking. It just works!
It is compact, so doesn't take up much space on my desk, and it looks sleek. Just like the Transformer movie, this flips open in two steps to reveal the serious business. Place a stack of paper in the tray, press the big blue button, and the scanner quickly, quietly, and efficiently reads each page (both sides) at a very rapid pace. The software (no TWAIN driver so you must use the FUJITSU software) quickly recognizes the correct orientation of the files, and then saves it according to your presets. The files pop up on screen with easy to view thumbnails.
At this point, I usually rename the files and then place them in the appropriate "cabinet" (Fujitsu's term for the folders within the storage area).
Only drawback is that as of my last check, there are no Windows Vista drivers....So if you have VISTA, don't get this just yet. Works great on XP.
Oh, but there is more. Since this scanner comes with the FULL version of Adobe Acrobat 7.0, I can edit, rotate, join, and separate Adobe PDF files. Also, the OCR software on this scanner is great. You can select your language and then have your PDFs become searchable.
I have been able to successfully OCR in both English and Japanese, but unfortunately, mixed language documents are not supported. You can only select one language to perform the OCR.
Bottom line: If I were to design a scanner to reduce a pile of office paper to a digital file, this is the way I would do it.
Also, the SCANSNAP remains turned off until you open up the paper trays. A very convenient function.
A quick note, I spent much more money purchasing Kodak Scanners (I can't recall the model number now) for my office. They were Over $1400 each...and yet, the ScanSnap has them beat hands down for ease of operation and compact size.
It has been a while since a product has captured my enthusiasm this powerfully. Try the ScanSnap, I think you'll like it!
