Fujitsu fi-6130 Sheetfed Scanner

Introduction
According to an InfoTrends forecast (2008) Fujitsu Imaging Products Group (IPG) owns 50-55% share of the Work Group Scanner Market Share (Work Group Scanner is an industry term describing scanners dealing with small to medium business workloads, usually priced under $2000). Having witnessed the evolution of the "fi-series" scanners from Fujitsu, I can clearly see the reason.
The Fujitsu fi-6130 is the next generation of workgroup scanners from Fujitsu following up on the big success of the fi-51xx and fi-41xx Sheet-fed models (I have used all of these models). Like its ancestors the fi-6130 makes good use of its small form factor, convenience of use while keeping up with the same reliability which is the biggest asset of the Fujitsu fi-series scanners

The General Experience
Working in the Healthcare IT industry and promoting the use of Electronic Medical Records, helping physicians and their staff to get rid of their existing paper records is a major step in the whole process. These sheet-fed scanners have become a major part of all my implementations. I usually place them in the front-office, allowing the secretaries to scan paper as it comes in. Most of their exiting paper records are also scanned in the same fashion.
Busy offices, that deal with more than 40 patients a day, also dealing with existing patient charts, having to scan around 250 - 400 pages a day, often like to have 2 of these units. The scanner is good for A4 / Letter Size pages and does a pretty good job for scanning cards and other smaller non-standard size items as well.  The Automatic Document feeder (or ADF) on the top has adjustable clips that allow you the position the paper accurately in an upright position. The unit conveniently fits in all settings as it has a very small desk space foot print. The paper tray conveniently folds up when not in use.

Scanning Specifics
In my experience with these medical offices, I mostly use the scanner in Simplex mode, Black and White @ 200 dpi. At this resolution the text is very readable on screen and comes out looking decent when printed. The best part is that the scanner does all of this at a pretty decent speed of around 30 ppm (pages per minute). On the other hand the scanner really does achieve the speeds of around 80 ipm (images per minutes) or 40 ppm when it is used at the same resolution but in the duplex mode. The scanner does not take a lot of lot of warm-up time like some of the other scanners that I have used.
Apart from scanning plain old paper the scanner also does a good job, scanning business cards, insurance cards and other non-standard size documents. The scanner also works great as a photo scanner. You can literally scan a whole roll worth of 4" x 6" printed photographs, at a good resolution of 300 dpi under 5 minutes.
Having an automatic document feeder really lets you use the scanner in fire and forget mode. You load up the document feeder and let it scan while you do other stuff. Most of the time, the ultrasonic multi-feed detection really works the way it is supposed to, and helps avoid issues like paper jams and multiple documents going through the same time.
I must say here that I have experienced both of these issues with this model. That usually happens when you try to test the limits of the amount of paper that you can load. My recommendation is to stay safe by going a little under the limit. In my line of work, sometimes the clients have medical records spanning more than a 100 pages per record. This is the only limiting factor of the scanner. I just wish it could hold more than 50 sheets in the document feeder.

Comparison with other models
Before I continue with this, I want to make one point absolutely clear. I believe that there are no other scanners out there that come even close to what the fi-series of sheet fed scanners have to offer. This comparison will give you a fair idea of the price to performance ratio for the top 3 scanners of the fi-series A4 Scanners.

Looking at the above comparison, it is clear that the fi-6130 gives you the best bang for your buck, under $1000. There is a marked difference of a more than double the scanning speeds between fi-6130 and fi-5110C scanners; thus spending a little extra for that makes perfect sense. The fi-6140 is currently priced at $1450.00. Although it does offer a performance boost, it certainly doesn't justify the $630 price difference. The choice is clear, the fi-6130.

Bundled Software

Conclusion
The scanner has no match in terms of speed and reliability which justifies the cost. If you are looking for a sheet-fed scanner for office use for all kind of documents, cards, receipts etc., look no further than the Fujitsu fi-6130. For under $1000, there is NOTHING BETTER out there.
