The Bottom Line:
Nice inexpensive DVD player
A couple of months ago, I decided to get a DVD player for the bedroom. It was just a basic need just something to watch DVDs on and that would be about it. I needed something relatively small though to fit in the area where I was going to put it. So I trucked down to Wal-Mart to see what was there, and I ran across the Magnavox DP100MW8B Compact DVD Player for a sweet $29.98 and it was just the right size and price, so I scooped it up.
This really is compact- it's about 9 inches long and about 8 inches across, and it is black in color. I also appreciated that they supplied AV cords (white, yellow, and red cords) to hook to my TV so I didn't get home and realize I needed them later, which is a mess when you want to hook something up right that minute.
Here's some info about the features of the DVD player from Wal-Mart's site:
Progressive scan video out
Plays: DVD Video, DVD+R/RW (video format), DVD-R/RW (video format), CD-R/RW, audio CD, MP3
Title, sub title display
Skip, pause and resume play
Program play (CD/DVD/MP3: 20 titles)
Zoom (1/2x, 2x, 3x, 4x)
Virtual surround system
Dolby Digital stream out
Slow (FWD: 5 steps)
Search (FWD/REV:5 Steps)
Setup is pretty easy with this little dude- I just took the cables and plugged one end into my TV and then the others into the back of the player and that was pretty much it. It does come with its own remote but I decided to use my Directv remote to operate it, and that was the hardest part of the setup- I had to go to my manual and plug in a couple of codes before I finally got the right one, but it took me about 10 minutes and then it was ready to go. You could just work the player with a separate remote if you wanted to though.
There's not too much technology going on with this- I mean my kids can operate it. On the front of the player you'll see a power button, and then beside it you'll see a little red light letting you know it is on. Then there's an open and close button, and then a play and stop button. You can pretty much do basic commands standing right there in front of it, but if you wanted to use the fast forward, reverse and skip buttons you'd have to use the remote.
As far as playback, I know a few of the other reviewers said after a couple of DVDs that the player began skipping, but to be honest I haven't had this trouble and I've watched quite a few movies with it. I haven't noticed any skipping or anything like that since I've had it. The picture doesn't have any fuzz to it and I don't have skipping and picture quality is just as good as the more expensive model I have in the living room.
Overall, I'd recommend this- it certainly fits well in a small space and if you need just an extra DVD player for a bedroom or children's room this would fit the bill. It is priced very nicely as well and it is easy to use.
