GE Comes Through with a Solid Alarmclock
Pros
Weekend cancel function, grad-u-wake function, battery backup, and pre-set clock.
Cons
No display dimmer, I'd like a slightly larger snooze bar, and down-sizing the other buttons.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
A great overall radio, especially if you don't need a cd player.
Still looking for a clock radio after my run-in with the GE 74801 (you can see my review here) I decided on the 74894. Thankfully, I wasn't dissapointed! It had just about everything that I wanted in an alarmclock, except it had a green display instead of blue. However, because of the price and the performance, I'm not going to complain.
The main feature of this alarm clock that I like is the weekend alarm cancel function. Do you have a job that you work Monday through Friday at the same time? Well, you can hit a button on this radio, and it will turn off your alarm on Saturday/Sunday! This means that instead of me forgetting to turn it off on Friday (and getting woken up on Saturday) and forgetting to turn it on on Sunday (and being late for work Monday), I just hit the button and never have to fool around with it! Genius! Also, it has the grad-u-wake function, which ramps up the volume of the alarm/radio when it turns on. This means that it may not have to wake up everyone else in the house too (if you wake up in time).
Also, this radio (not unlike many other GE models) has a built in battery backup. Say there's a power outage or brownout, the battery you install (two AA's I believe) will keep your settings until you restore power. This is very handy if you live in an area that's prone to brown-outs. Unfortunately, if you've lost power completely, it doesn't operate. The battery only saves your settings.
Interstingly, this unit also has the time pre-set! Once I plugged it in, it was automatically set to the correct time, even without me having to set it up. CREEPY. However, it is nice for once not to have to set a clock. Also, it has settings for your time zone, as well as whether you want to set it for daylight savings. Just flip a switch, and it's set! I think what I like the most is the adjustable snooze bar. If you hold in the snooze bar, then hit the back or forward buttons, it will increase or decrease the time you get to snooze.
