Looks GREAT... Until You Get it
Pros
Nice blue display, and a sleek look. The "grad-u-wake" system is very nice!
Cons
No auto-dimming, no weekend-cancel, cheaply constructed.
Recommended it?
No
The Bottom Line:
Based on the absent features, I would look elsewhere. The GE 74894 is a much better unit.
So I was in the market for a new alarm clock. My old alarm clock was getting flakey (it was really a stereo with an alarm function), and my old GE alarm clock was still working great in another room. After checking GE's website for their latest and greatest models, this SEEMED like the best one they had! Here are the features that sold me (available on GE's website):
Auto brightness control
Weekend day cancel (so it doesn't go off on Sat/Sun)
CD player
Well of the three, only the CD player worked. It had brightness control, but it most certainly wasn't automatic as they had left me to believe. It was either VERY bright, or VERY dim. The weekend day cancel feature was COMPLETELY absent from this model. I actually emailed GE about why their product information was so misleading, but instead of answering my question they just gave me a canned "Please call our 1-800 number to speak with a representaive" response.
I really wanted to like this unit, because if it had done what it said, it would've been the PERFECT clock radio for me. The blue display has a very cool, soothing look to it, which when coupled with an automatic brightness control would be great. The weekend cancel feature is great (I know because the replacement I bought has it), because I almost always forget to turn it off on Friday night, and then always forget to turn it back on on Sunday night.
On the plus side of things, it does have GE's "grad-u-wake" system. What that does is start the alarm/radio out lower in volume, then ramps it up. This is nice because it usually wakes me up early enough not to disturb anyone else. However, in the event I'm just dead tired, it will get me up eventually. The construction of the unit felt a little flimsy. The buttons on top felt very cheaply made, especially the two main sets of control buttons, which were just rocker discs.
Overall, I was very disappointed with this item. Had it came through with the specs it was said to have, I would've been set for life. However, in the end it just ended up wasting my time.
