New Superadio III arrived last night
Pros
Great sound, price is right, ample volume
Cons
tuning dial inaccurate, tuning a little finicky
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Great radio for most purposes. Buy this unless you are very finicky technically and willing to spend hundreds more.
I had done a fair amount of reading about this radio on the Internet
before I ordered it and much of what I read turned out to be true. On
AM tuning to 990 (station about 14 miles away, 50kW day, 10kW night)
it takes a little fiddling to tune in and even then there is a little
occasional crosstalk from other stations. Ferrite bar seems to be
fairly directional so turning radio helps to get best signal. I can see why one person attached a miniature lazy susan to the bottom of the radio to make this easier. The
numbers on the tuning dial are not accurate (as others have mentioned)
so 990 reads about 1150 on the dial, about a half inch off where it
should be, but I'm not likely to try the elaborate mods others have
described - what's the big deal, you just remember that to get 990 you
turn the dial to around 1150. The audio is great and volume quite
adequate to fill my kitchen and then later my cavernous garage. There
is a little pop on the speaker when you turn it on even with the
volume turned all the way down, but again no biggy and not a surprise
since reviewers had mentioned that. I like the fact that the power
switch is separate from the volume. The case is plastic and not as
elegant as some table radios but you're buying this model for the
sound more than the looks, but that said I don't think it looks all
that bad. Overall I think it's a pretty
good radio especially for $44 delivered. On AM gets lots of stations
including ones pretty far away (one New York station 90 miles away and
I'm sure if I spent some time tuning around at night I could pick up
ones hundreds of miles away). I may order another one to have one in
kitchen, one in garage.
