GPX C3972 - So Cheap, It's Practically Free!

Pros Cheap, It Works, Adequate Sound, No Reliability Issues As Of Yet
Cons For $20, not really.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  For $20, how can you go wrong?
One day I went in search of the cheapest CD player that I could find. I found the GPX C3972, which you can purchase very cheap at stores. Circuit City and Target sell GPX brand stuff for very little. I needed a device that would just play CDs, but would leave me comfortable enough to take it on the CTA Rapid Transit in Chicago without caring too much about it getting stolen. After some use, here's what I found with the GPX C3972.

-Price-
*What can I say? The damn thing is $20. This thing is no Ferrari, but not a Yugo either. Most CD players for a good one are at least $40, such as those from Sony and other brands. However, the GPX C3972 is only slightly more expensive than a CD. The GPX C3972 does exactly what it's supposed to do, it plays CDs. They spin around, you hear the music, and this device doesn't break thankfully. Some people might steer clear of something like this because they think it won't last. Though I've used it fairly constantly since I spend a lot of my time commuting within the city, and never had any problems with it. It's a bare-bone CD player, it doesn't play MP3s, but it does have the other things that you might find handy. These include the bass boost, skip protection, and even volume controls! (Ok, the last one was sarcasm). If you're really into music and want something cool on the go, I wouldn't recommend the GPX C3972 because it doesn't have MP3 playback or any of the fancier features you'd find on more expensive devices. But if you just need something where you'll be taking it in either very rugged or unsafe conditions, this player is ideal since it's not much of a loss if you completely beat it up or lose it.

-Ease of Use & Features-
*The GPX C3972 lacks the nice features that you'd find on anything more expensive. It does have the ability to play CD-R/Ws so that you can play your burned discs, even though it doesn't have MP3 playback. The GPX C3972 also has a 45-second skip protection, a far cry from Sony's acclaimed G-Protection, but at least it does help in keeping your music from skipping all of the time. It's a very simple to use CD player because of its simplistic design, though no portables are really all that difficult to use.

-Performance-
*The GPX C3972 is a far cry from the more expensive portables out there, but it does play CDs. Well, that's what a portable CD player is built to do, and the GPX C3972 does that pretty damn well. I've never had any reliability issues with it since I've been using it. There is a fine line between the performance you'd expect from a home theater system versus listening to something on the go. Ok, maybe the GPX C3972 doesn't have the greatest sound quality or come with hi-fi noise cancelling headphones, but it does play all of your favorite music where you can hear it, and get some enjoyment out of it. You will be getting better sound quality if you buy another product such as a Sony, Panasonic, or anything else, but what do you really expect for $20? It's a quality product with adequate sound, and that's what's important.

-The Verdict-
*$20 for a device like this is practically nothing. This is about as cheap as they come. The GPX C3972 isn't a piece of garbage though, it plays CDs efficiently, and looks fairly nice too. So if you're looking for a portable CD player that you can throw around or not care about losing, then the GPX C3972 is a pretty good choice, not that there are many others out there for this cheap.
