The Bottom Line:

Buy this GPS if you can get it for $379, or less. It's many features are worth the extra money!

I have been looking at this GPS for nearly a year but refused to pay $499 for a GPS.  Recently I found it in Sam's Club for $379. This was about $100 more than I wanted to spend on a GPS, but it included free lifetime Traffic updates and one free map upgrade. This easily made up for the $100 cost difference in my mind!

What a beautiful unit!

The integrated BlueTooth works great with my Motorola phone and I didn't have any of the issues reported on other forums about pairing the phone to the GPS. Also, the sound quality on the other end is good when using hands free calling and you are talking through the integrated microphone. (Notice I said it was good, not great. I think a lot has to do with how noisy it is in your car, whether the windows are down, and how far away the unit is from the person speaking.)

If you use the GPS's integrated FM Transmitter, the person speaking on the other end plays through your car stereo's FM receiver on a user-determined FM station. (I've read where people complained that the volume was too low, but they must have been using the GPS's built-in internal speaker, otherwise the complaint doesn't make sense.)

The GPS has a built-in .mp3 player that, again, when paired with the built-in FM Transmitter works great! The mp3 player recognizes .wav and .mp3 formats only. Other formats are not recognized.

I picked up an 8-Gig memory card for $25 and now the GPS serves triple-duty as a GPS, integrated BlueTooth device, and .mp3 (8-Gig iPod) replacement!

The GPS displays .jpeg files as well. Who would look at their photos on a GPS, you ask?

Well, I found a really neat use for this feature.

I created a bunch of MS PowerPoint files and MS Word documents with information about frequent flyer programs, hotel discount programs, my lawn mower and snow blower replacement part numbers, a scan of my ident-a-kid cards, vehicle registrations, medical insurance cards, etc. and loaded them into the GPS.

Now, whenever I'm travelling and I need this important information, it is right there at my finger tips!

There is a new feature called eco-drive which "challenges" you to drive smarter in a more eco-friendly way. Tree hugging Prius owners will love this feature!  Me, I liked being able to plug in how much I paid for a gallon of gas and get an idea of how much each trip I plan, will cost me in gas.

There are really too many features to go through, one-by-one.

Complaint-wise, the search can take a long time if you are too general in your search criteria.

I wish the search engine more intelligently used my current location and provided a subset of results more quickly, while the rest of the database is crawled and final results are tabulated.

For example, recently, I was in Troy, NY looking for St. Mary's Cemetery. When I entered "Saint Mary's Cemetery" the search took something like 4 full minutes to begin showing results, and none were the one in Troy, NY.

I had to repeat the search providing more details than I should have needed to, before it found the cemetery.  (Also, cemeteries should be a search category, just like schools, municipal buildings, libraries, etc. I think people travelling for a funeral would be a common event where a GPS would be used and come in handy. Finding cemeteries should be easier than it currently is.)

My other complaint is the free map upgrade needs to be done within 60-days of the GPS unit's activation. There is no saving the free upgrade and waiting until next year's map update to redeem it.

The GPS appears to be accurate down to within 15-30 feet depending on how it is being used and how fast you are travelling. I have not tried it in pedestrian or bicycle modes, so accuracy may be greater than I described.

Battery power easily lasted 4 hours. I probably could have stretched it to 5 or 6 hours if I played around with the settings and introduced some power saving techniques.

The built in storage appears to be 4-Gigs, so adding external memory is purely discretionary.

Setup was a snap. No instructions were in the box, only a quick start manual. A full manual is available free, from Garmin, on-line at their website.

Also, I recommend going to the Garmin website and installing all the latest drivers and updates before you use the GPS. This fixes a host of issues and complaints described on various forums. Performing the upgrades was easy and straightforward.

Lastly, you can load your own points of interest, create your own travel logs, change the vehicle animation that shows up on the display, change the voice "character" of the person that gives you directions, and do a host of other neat things with your GPS that you might not think possible.

I strongly recommend this full featured GPS. For me a price point below $399 sealed the deal for all the extras that this unit provides!

PRICE UPDATE: Sam's Club lowered the price of the 765T to $347. I brought my receipt to the store and they adjusted the price, issuing me a $50+ refund, no questions asked!

Folks, buy this GPS, it absolutely rocks!
