First wave of Mp3 cd players
Pros
Plays mp3s...
Cons
Very Large, Ugly, feels very cheap, eats batteries like nuts.
Recommended it?
No
The Bottom Line:
In conclusion, I wouldn';t recommend anyone buying the Tavarua . Save your money and get a RioVolt.
How it looks
When I first took the actual CD player out of the box i realized that it was huge. It's almost twice as thick as a regular CD player. This really didn't bother me because there has to be more circuitry in the CD player itself to decode those mp3s and play them. The player is also a very ugly color. It is a sort of ?urine gold?.
How it feels
The Tavarua feels very cheap. It creeks when you squeeze or push down on the cover and the open button feels like it?s going to pop off and break if you push it to hard. However, the player surprisingly is very durable. I have punched it several times and hit it against my friend?s car center console in an attempt to play a regular CD play and it still ran fine (minus the fact it still didn?t play the CD).
How it Plays MP3s
It takes about 15 seconds for the Tavarua to start . From then you might as well close your eyes and try to navigate thru your mp3s because it?s a numerical 1-line LCD and it doesn?t display the name of the songs. Your better off printing a list of Mp3s you burned because it?s nearly impossible to locate songs.
Another annoying feature of the mp3 player is that it you can?t adjust the treble or bass. Instead they have some 5 preset modes for you: Bass/Super Bass/Treble/Super Treble. All of which, sound like crap.
Also I would like to point out something; there is 2 play buttons. What moron needs 2 play buttons?
How it Plays regular CDs
Ok? It the box says it plays normal CDs but I haven?t had one work properly yet. It constantly skips ever 3 seconds. I tried pausing the CD for a few seconds to see if it was a buffer problem or something. I tried many playing other CDs and it still skips. It plays normal CDs, just not correctly.
Battery Life
The manual claims that you can squeeze 12 hours of battery life off 2 double AA?s. This is where the player angers me off the most. I have emailed Genica many times about this and they haven?t gotten back to me yet. I have tried almost every single battery known to man to achieve 12 hours of play. The most I have gotten out of it is 4 hours on Duracell Ultras.
