OnAir HDTV GT
Pros
portable, USB vs PCI, simple installation. Tuner interface replaces editor software.
Cons
Editor software on CD partially works. Help manual could be better.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
on durability I gave it a 3 because of the external 12 inch antenna and laptop usage. 5 if you use a rooftop antenna on a desktop PC.
I use this on my desktop computer. It was designed for laptops. I'm using a 3.2 ghz P4 hyper threading dual processor, 1 gig ram, 500 gig HD's.
I'm now using it on a P4 Vista Pentium D dual core 2.8 ghz machine. There's little change between how it worked on this one or the 3.2 ghz. machine. The thing makes extensive use of the HD. At times it does slow my machine down, but I have to be heavy multitasking with other utils. ie: Photoshop, Nero, and MS Access at the same time.
The software could be better. ie: you'll need a subscription to some sort of TV guide to program the recurring events, use the Free TV guides online, Or wait for it to download the daily schedule from each channel. Real tedious. The editor software semi works. But you can make captures using just the HDTV and the controller. Probably simpler that way anyways. You should use the updates from the onair web site. The picture and capture is excellent. For some strange reason it also has more channels than my $1288 HDTV. And it will capture a weak channel better also.
I bought it thinking at worst it costs the same for a month of groceries. Not a huge loss if it's crap.
1. It's better than the $400.00 ATI AIW 9800 analog TV that I thought was HDTV.
2. it's better than the $1288 magnavox 37 " HDTV I have.
It does NOT require a HDTV specific antenna. Speaking of antennas. it was designed for a laptop. It comes with a collapsible 12 inch antenna. I never used it so can't comment on how that works. I'd guess poorly, but other reviews say great. I'm 60 miles from the nearest tv transmitter. I use a analog roof top antenna and have over 64 channels. It actually has 3 other TV modes than my $1200 HDTV.
When you figure in the cost of the computer, and HDTV GT. it comes out to about the same cost as my 37 inch hdtv.
But if you want to watch TV on the computer, you pay.
Also it's one of the few tv's for computer that work thru the USB connector. Others require PCI or PCI express.
I just need to add these comments.
My old analog TV died. I went and bought a 37" LCD HDTV. When I saw the quality of HDTV, it made me want to replace my ANALOG ATI computer tv, so I bought this. In the past month and a half I have tried AND returned 5 HDTV's.
1st one froze when changing channels on the 20th day.
repairman said dump it and get brand xxxxx.
I couldn't find brand xxxxx at that time. But did REPLACE with brand YYYYY. It also FROZE on the 1st night, in a different way. I liked everything about the 2nd one, and figured it was a minor glitch. Returned it and replaced it with the SAME HDTV. This one took 2 days to fail the same way the 1st one did by freezing up.
Went to store zzzzz for brand AAAAA. Got to loading it up in the truck bed, it was a 'plasma' and warehouse man said I can NOT lay this TV on it's side or it will be ruined. Didn't even touch this one. Returned it unopened. Don't need anything that fragile. Probably why it's $2000.00 off.
Went to another store for 37" LCD. 1st question hows your return policy = We'll fix it within it's warranty period. NO RETURNS. So that's #4 I didn't waste time on. Why would I want to waste time repairing their TV ? Went to another famous store [Best Buy]. I made a list of 37" HDTV's locally 4 days earlier. In that time period they jacked up the price on the one I wanted by $200.00. Xmas I guess. but the fact that I had it listed with several other TV's on a printout meant squat. I didn't even ask about their return policy.
So in a month and a half I've seriously considered 5 different HDTV's. And unconsidered them for future shopping. But I'm sitting here with the HDTV GT running and in a moment I'll full screen it and let it turn itself off after switching to my favorite program, and recording it.
I'm not even sure I need a TV, since I can port the DVD/VCR directly thru the ATI board's port to watch the DVD. That's the only drawback I see. I can't port it thru the HDTV GT.
And as a last comment. The HDTV GT is older than all the 3 HDTV's I tried, and hasn't had any trouble at all.
I Can't believe I can't find a working 37" HDTV, or a reputable store to sell one.
