The Bottom Line:
An inexpensive recorder that does the job. Fan motor turning itself on at times is a big drawback but I'm keeping mine.
I purchased this at CircuitCity and am not happy with them because after having written a review of this model they never published it. This model has a confusing manual and it takes patience to figure things out. This unit caused me two problems. First, unlike anything I experienced before with any electronic device, when I powered off the unit, the fan motor intermittently somehow would turn itself back on without my intervention even though the rest of the unit seemed to be off. I then had to power on and power off the unit to shut off the fan motor. Second, the device constantly prohibits you from recording copies of one DVD to another or VHS to DVD. It seems almost any DVD or tape you try to record from will stop this unit from recording because of copy protected blocking signals. So, if you want to transfer a DVD or VHS tape collection to DVD you will have to purchase another product to add to this Toshiba. I did find recording from programs on television to work fine. I returned my device to CircuitCity and purchased another one but this time from Office Depot. The same issue happened. Sometimes the fan motor turns itself on when it seems the unit is off. This doesn't always happen, but did occur once since I replaced the original unit. I suggest you purchase a copy protection eliminator video duplicator if you want to record anything and overcome the blocking signals. They cost $110 and it works well on this Toshiba and likely any other unit just fine. The website www.110220volts.com sells one such model by the model number DP6000. Also note, that this unit will not record on the DVD+RW format that has material recorded on from another model. The DVD must be blank from the start to be recordable on this unit. Then, it can be used for recording many times. Be aware, I tried to apply on-line Office Depot coupons but they do not apply to Technology items which anything that plugs into an outlet is considered. Do not purchase anything from OneCall merchant because if you read their return policy they will not refund your money if the item is not factory sealed. Pay a few dollars more and deal with Office Depot. They also have free shipping and it took only two days to reach me.
