A great "mid weight" pro !

bybige67 Jan 12, 2003
Pros Power ! User friendly. Great sound. Plenty of In's and Out's. Massive.
Cons Tricky remote. Bad rep on AVR110's. No Speaker A/B. Loose feeling volume ctrl.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Don't let the watts fool you (go Amps!). Top quality sound, in an affordably priced receiver. Nice and strong. Straight forward, usefull and easy to use features. Beautiful back panel.
At first I was looking for a Home Theater in a box. Then I understood that I could get an A/V Receiver with better speakers for abit more. Finally, I found a pair of beautiful speakers, The Wharfedales 8.4's with a "8.center" unit.(I will put a review on these shortly). Now I had to match them to a receiver.

The winner from my first list was the Panasonic SA-HE 100. So much for so little. But I was told they would not "power properly" the high-ish end speakers I had chosen (no amps...?), that I should go up a notch.

Then came the Yamaha RX-V630 or 730, the Denon AVR 1603/1803. The next level from the popular and more affordable Jap's ( Sony, JVC, Panasonic- that I love).

More Power, more Features, both were up to spec for sure. But in the end, they had less Coax In's then I needed and that the HK offered. Second, they both advertised 80 or 100 watts at 8@hms or something, just like evereyone. Denon apparently had more drive!? then the Yamaha, and could better power my Wharfedales (that ring in at around 87 dcbs, but ahhh ...). HK clearly stated (somewhere) the 45 amps (or close) it produces. That's like 3-4 times the others apparently. And they are all accounted for in the sound...

So this is what makes the H/K and the AVR 125 (or the 225 for that matter) really powerful for the claimed 55 watts@ 2-channel (or 45watts @ surround). And this is what made my choice. Boy can it deliver sound. You can really hear the difference.

Everything that the "RFMAN" wrote in his revue (jan09-03) I agree with (except for the assignable stuff- lost me there buddy). The Amps comes out in a very well controled and complete sound. No distortion at all. No loss at all. Very honest reproduction of recording for the money.

At this price, the HK AVR125 (or AVR 225 with 10 more watts and on-screen set up)delivers an astounding quality and volume of sound that can fill a room (15x25) with beautiful well balanced audio for music or movies. The set-up is straight forward (less then 30 minutes). The front panel or the back, are simpler then the others I was looking at. The different listenning modes are extremely beneficial, able to truly enhance a "normal" listenning experience(logic 7 for music, Vmax for (older)movies).
