Good buy
Pros
Great sound. Durable. Tons of surround options.
Cons
The OSD (On Screen display) is hard to use without monitor.
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Strongly recommend. Beautiful sound. Well engineered.
I got this at a good price at Fry's - $280. I didn't want to go with brands like Sony/Kenwood because they specify the 'max' power they support. They make no statements about the RMS (Root Mean Square Power) which leads you to wonder how much power they are capable of delivering on a sustained basis. Brands like Harmon Kardon promise you the RMS value which is something that I felt was something that I could trust. Given the small hall I have placed it in, I had no room for very powerful sound - so the promised 45 Watts per channel was enough for me.
I am not an 'audiophile' so I will not go into the details of Audio Engineering. When I was researching, I felt the dire need for reviews that gave some hint to the longevity of the product than just to 'bells and whistles'. So I want to tell you that I am using this receiver with a pair of Bose Floor speakers (701 II) and a center channel Boston Acoustic. I have used this for more than a year now, and have had no problems whatsoever. I don't like listening to either movies or music at elevated volumes, so I must say this Receiver performs laudably at low volumes. Very clear and very deep and very real. There are no 'engineering gotchas' - heat sinks work great, the controls on the box are easy to operate, the remote is a universal one and works well (controls my Sony DVD NS 715 as well my Sony TV).
The only gripe I have about this product is the OSD (On Screen Display) - meaning controlling functionality from the little LCD display on the box itself, instead of going into 'monitor' mode. It is hard to use. If I want to turn up the center channel volume quickly - I need to start my TV (if I am watching DVD, I need to stop the movie, go into the OSD on the Monitor) and adjust the volume. It would have been nice if I could quickly do it from the OSD. Also the OSD LCD-Brightness seems to clear itself after every power down. Meaning that if you feel that the LCD display is too bright, turn it down to dim, power off the box and turn it on again - it goes bright again - and it is very bright! I have gone over the manual thoroughly and am not sure if i missed something, or its some sort of 'bug' in the control.
But other than these minor things, its a great value for money. You can review all the features at cnet. In particular I like the granular control on 'Night Mode' - where sudden changes in volume while watching a movie are suppressed. There is no loss in 'speech' quality with this feature turned on.
