Pros Great sound, lots of ins and outs, sinfully easy sound balancing
Cons No component video ins/outs
Recommended it? Yes

I've had the HK AVR 220 for about 3 months now, and I absolutely love it. Here's how it stacks up against the other receivers I was considering purchasing:

1. Full use of all speakers: Many of the cheaper home theater receivers only use the center and surround speakers when processing a... Read full review »

Pros Excellent digital decoder with additional modes that augment and complement the requisite...
Cons Low power output rating and a supposed reliability problem reported in a few reviews.
Recommended it? Yes

This receiver replaced my dated Sony 100 watt stereo amp and separate tuner. Needless to say, the upgrade also included a digital coax cable and a pair of surround speakers.

Basically, it does a much better job on the digital decode than my Sony progressive scan DVD. The sound is now... Read full review »

Pros Great sound. Durable. Tons of surround options.
Cons The OSD (On Screen display) is hard to use without monitor.
Recommended it? Yes

I got this at a good price at Fry's - $280. I didn't want to go with brands like Sony/Kenwood because they specify the 'max' power they support. They make no statements about the RMS (Root Mean Square Power) which leads you to wonder how much power they are capable of delivering on a sustained... Read full review »

Cons no automatic surround setting. no automatic digital input. very small display/scrolling...

There is no question that the sound quality on this unit is stellar. HK is known for their quality products, although their manufacture in Asia may indicate declining overall quality.

In my opinion the best features of this unit are the configurability. A couple local stereo places have... Read full review »

Pros Warm, rich tones at a reasonable price.
Cons No A/B switching.
Recommended it? Yes

This review is a little 'late' - the receiver has been replaced by 2 subsequent models now. Nonetheless, I think it's such a great unit, it's worth reviewing if you can pick it up used or at an 'end-of-the-line' kind of store.

I won't spend too much time on the features - by today's... Read full review »

Second Harman Kardon Receiver

Pros sturdy construction, powerful & clean amplification, elegant design
Cons doesn't have 6.1 or 7.1 decoding, if that is a con.
Recommended it? Yes

My first introduction to Harman Kardon Audio Video Receivers was an AVR35 Dolby Pro-Logic receiver. I was hooked. It had more headroom and less distortion than other receivers I have owned with much higher power ratings. The AVR 220 is a great receiver. Sure it doesn't have 6.1 or 7.1 deccoding,...
