I went to a specialized hi-fi store looking for a good step up from my current Denon receiver. The AVR 300 provided the perfect combination of power and features. DO NOT BE FOOLED BY THE SEEMINGLY LOWER WATTAGE RATINGS ON THE HARMAN/KARDON RECEIVERS! The 35+ amps provide plenty of confident power to put the generic 100x5 receivers to shame. The AVR 300 excels in two areas: First the amplifier is strong and confident. The bass response is impressive and the processor is very smooth. Second is the use of the AVR as a system controller. The 300 has excellent on-screen menus and controls. The remote control is not as good as it could be for controlling other devices but is only a minor flaw. All things considered the AVR 300 from Harman/Kardon is an excellent receiver for around $600 and I would recommend it highly.
