OK, but I'd look elsewhere
Pros
Good sound.
Cons
Just not great value for $$$.
Recommended it?
No
I bought this product based on the recommendations and demo within an Audiophile store. I had heard of Harmon/Kardon and knew that they generally had above average equipment, better than the pieces that I could buy at my local consumer electronics stores, such as Best Buy or Circuit City.
Overall, I am not pleased with the AVR 65. Although it is a nice unit, there are a number of things that bother me specifically. I own a very nice subwoofer, that I enjoy with movies. However, I don't enjoy it with music. There's no easy way to have it on for one and not the other. I find that extremely annoying (and you can't have it send the full range bass to the subwoofer and regular speakers).
I'll have to admit, it sounds great though. The music and movies are much more clear than on my older Yamaha receiver that I own. The receiver doesn't seem to be as powerful as I'd expect ... for movies, I usually have it set to about 60-75% of max.
The remote is OK -- nothing spectacular. I haven't tried the "universal" features.
The design of the unit is nice -- very cleanly laid out, and easier to switch to various modes than other models I've owned.
I personally wouldn't recommend this product to others. It cost enough that there are a lot of nice options available that you'll probably be happy with (for much less $$$). It's a nice receiver, but I would shop around before buying another. There's just nothing spectacular about this unit.
