The Bottom Line:
I am extremely satisfied with this well engineered and musical sounding receiver. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone looking to upgrade their surround system.
Wow! This receiver sounds incredible and it's got plenty of power and all the features you could ask for. For the $378.00 that I paid, I couldn't be happier. This is truly in a class by itself. For 4 years I've been using a Technics SA-AX7(manufactured by Panasonic and originally marketed to the "high fidelity" crowd) 5.1 Surround receiver, but it lacked some features and the sound quality was lacking at times. I researched the surround receivers on the market in the $300 to $500 range and fell in love with the elegance and the long standing history of the Harman/Kardon name. As a kid I remember a simple, but well built Harman/Kardon receiver that my parent's owned, it still works today, 20 years later.
Be prepared to spend some time with the manual if you want to learn how to use all of the AVR 240'S features. This receiver is packed with valuable features that will leave you wondering why other manufacturers have left them out. You couldn't ask for more inputs and outputs on a home theater receiver (including 7 channels of amplification!) and the On Screen Menu system makes assigning inputs and adjusting settings fairly easy.
I have been using the AVR 240 to power my 5 Paradigm Studio 20, 2-way speakers and my Paradigm PW Series 12" Powered Subwoofer. I can honestly say that I have never heard my Studio 20s sound so full of life. The sound stage is incredibly rich and sounds reproduced are articulate. The amplifier was able to reveal depth and nuances in music that I hadn't heard since listening with high quality headphones. In addition to listening to DVD-Audio, DTS, and Dolby Digital Surround content, I tested the AVR 240 with 128 kbps AAC Audio (Apple's iTunes Music Store format). The receiver did not reveal data compression and proved to provide musical reproduction of the content.
Harman/Kardon's 55 Watt output rating is conservative compared to most other manufacturer's peak ratings. This amplifier has more power than my Technics which was supposedly rated at 100 Watts. I am extremely satisfied with this well engineered and musical sounding receiver. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone looking to upgrade their surround system.
