If there's one thing that Harman Kardon is famous for it's their sound. This unit lives up to that "sound" reputation. I auditioned this unit along with the HDCD model FL8550 and the FL8350 won! In my opinion the 16 bit D/A in the 8350 sounds better than the 20 bit Burr Brown D/A in the 8550. Bass is extremely tight. Mids and highs are smooth and very detailed. Some may complain about the small buttons on the face of the player but you get used to that. Besides, it's all about the sound anyway.
One of the newest things to hit the audio scene (for CD's anyway) is HDCD.
(High Definition Compatible Digital) While I agree that this encode/decode process sounds good, CD's using this encoding sound just as good on the FL8350 as they do on the FL8550.
As far as reliability, this unit seems very well built. The disc tray/motor combination is quieter than some of the Japanese brands. But what you'll enjoy most is the sound!
