The Bottom Line:
HK has made another great receiver. Sound quality, features, value, all unbeatable.
The Harman Kardon AVR 430 is one powerhouse of a receiver. Don't let the 65 watts per channel rating fool you. It can easily best receivers claiming twice that. My room is about 15' by 13', and the 430 doesn't have any problem at all at filling the room with near cinema level sound.
It comes with a great number of inputs. More than I'll ever need. It's DVD-A and SACD ready, and has full 7.1 preouts. That works for me since I plan on adding a separate amp in the future. It has zone 2 outputs, which is nice if you ever want to run a pair of speakers in the bedroom along with the 5.1 setup in the main listening area. A second zone remote is also included. One of my favorite features is the RS-232 port which enables you to receive updates for the receiver. Very cool. There are tons and tons of other features. Auto setup, ABus ready, various speaker settings and listening modes, everything you'll ever need. Some you'll probably never use.
Sound quality, as you would expect, is excellent. If you've owned or listened to HK, you should know that this is a given. When watching DVD's, the sound is very clean and detailed. And very dynamic. Even at high volumes, the receiver never seems to falter. Dialogue is always crystal clear, and all of effects come through without a hitch.
I know some people have complained about the remote being too complicated and awkward. I don't have a problem with it all. It's a while to get used to, but once you do, changing the volume or channels, or going through the menus becomes second nature.
For $899, this is a great receiver, and one of the best midrange units on the market. Considering its performance, its list of features, and upgradability, it represents an amazing value. I found mine, brand new, for only $375. Its already incredible value increases dramatically. For that price, it simply cannot be beat.
