The Bottom Line:  Great receiver for the money.
We purchased Our Harman Kardon AVR 247 7.1 channel home theater receiver from Harman Kardon directly from their eBay store as a factory reconditioned unit which comes with full warranty and support.  Setup was very straightforward owing to the extremely well thought-out layout of the connections on the back of the unit and color-coding of all connections.  I found some additional connection information on the internet that made things even easier.  The receiver is a bit heavy and cumbersome to move in and out of a cabinet, so it would help to have extra long cables so everything can be out in plain view to connect and test things before you have to slide it back into the cabinet.  The automatic setup with room microphone was a big help for someone not familiar with the multi-speaker setup (we use our receiver with a Bose Acoustimass speaker system).

Operating the receiver is a little bit quirky...the remote has a zillion buttons, so you're better off if you can program a simpler universal remote to operate the functions that you require.  Admittedly, we probably use 20% of the capabilities of this receiver, but I don't need the other 80% of the buttons getting in my way.  We were able to program our universal remote from the DirecTV receiver to do all but power on and off the receiver.  The problems we've experienced have been annoyances more than anything:
1.   There is a popping sound whenever you change channels, or even when a program switches from its HD broadcast to a standard level when local commercials come on.
2.  When watching videos on the DVD player, if the player is shut off before switching the receiver back to regualr TV viewing mode, it emits a VERY loud humming sound from the speakers.

Other than that, the receiver produces excellent home theater quality sound and picture from our Satellite receiver/DVR and DVD player.
