Great sound quality, but major firmware problems even after upgrade
Pros
- great sound quailty<br>- familiar setup and use if you owned a HK before
Cons
- firmware bugs even after upgrade
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
If you want great sound quality and can live with some bugs in the firmware this is a great receiver. If you want perfection unfortunately I can't recommend this.
I've had this receiver for over a year now, this being my 3rd HK receiver (AVR-125, AVR-235). As usual the sound quality is top notch, I don't even need to explain it further. The problem areas are related to the software. Seems like HK has great hardware guys, but needs to invest in hiring some quality software people. When I first bought it there were some major flaws in the firmware (LFE channel being 10dB lower than it's supposed to being the most obvious one). After installing the firmware fix last spring most issues went away with 2 exceptions (popping sounds from the speakers when I pause my DVR or PS3, and the inability to switch to 720p mode at certain times, most notably when trying to play Guitar Hero 3...come on HK Guitar Hero keeps my stress level low I need it :) ). Now they went on to newer pastures (AVR-254) so I'm guessing these issues remain unfixed. Not so cool..what's my incentive to buy the new shiny receiver if I know that 6 months from now they'll stop fixing bugs because the then next new thing is out?? Bad business practice if you ask me. So far I've been loyal to HK but I'm seriously thinking about jumping ship the next time I replace this. The sad thing is that they don't need a lot of money to fix all this, just good management which is hard to come by nowadays. When thousands of people read the negative reviews on AV forums you can't afford not to fix the bugs...unfortunately some execs still don't get this.
