He ain't so bad once he loses the hat

Pros John Wayne, the romanticism of Africa. Very light and humorous at times.
Cons The rocket part was kinda dumb. The ending went on a bit too long.
Recommended it? Yes

John Wayne, sigh. I don't know what to do with him. Part of me really wants to like him, but something inside me is in rebellion against the things that were crammed down my throat as a child. Like country music and Spaghetti-O's. It seemed that every time a cowboy hat popped up on the television... Read full review »

Howard Hawks Hatari! (Howard Hawks, USA 1962) was among the last of his works as a film director. Released in 1962, Hatari! is an excellent example of a standard Howard hawks comedy-adventure. Set in the African jungles, Shawn (John Wayne) and his group of comrades go an daily adventures to catch... Read full review »

Pros Great family entertainment
Cons No violence, no sex, no cons

"Hatari" is not the run of the mill Wayne picture, but he still manages to come up smelling like a rose. He's still the boss and as big as a mountain, and gives us a good performance. Wayne tames African Wildlife in this one and with the help of the animals this movie is very entertaining.

Pros Best Kissing Scene in all of Hollywood. Great Duke Movie!
Cons Hollywood doesn't make movies like this anymore.
Recommended it? Yes

This movie has, in my opinion, the best kiss in Hollywood history ("How do you like to kiss?"). The movie has all the best elements of a classic John Wayne film: Good Humor, Camaraderie, Pretty Women, Handsome Men, Believable Action, Great Dialogue and a Terrific Story. My favorite character in... Read full review »

Hatari [VHS]

Howard Hawks's 1962 adventure-comedy is basically the same, loosely plotted movie Hawks made over and over again for decades. A collection of professionals with a common goal--in this case, animal trapping in Tanganyika-- forms a pocket community and holds each other to high standards in their work. This is a film about camaraderie, crisp banter, romance, and exciting action (the animal sequences are great). John Wayne played this part in about a thousand ways for Hawks over the years, and he could not be more entertaining as a grizzled pro. --Tom Keogh
