Do not buy this printer!

Pros Fax, copy, scan, print, networking all in one unit. Great print quality.
Cons Problems with design of cartridge compartment. Fax not compatible with VoIP. Poor customer service.
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  Poor design of cartridge compartment makes this printer an expensive disposable item.
This printer is an all-in-one model from HP and includes a printer with photo quality output, scanner, fax, copier (colour and black) and network capabilities (wired not wireless). I bought it for small business and home use.

I have owned this printer for approx 18 months and aside from the occasional scanner error (which was fixed with a reboot) I was pleased with it. The print quality (especially photo) and scan quality are excellent and the software is easy to use and has both album storage for photos and editing features. It is also one of the few all in one machines that has network capabilities and performed well on our network.

Approx 15 months into ownership I got an error message about a printer cartridge that needed replacing and persisted, despite replacing the cartridges. For a while I was able to continue printing (but not scanning or copying as these were blocked by the printer and software), but then my cartridge ran out again and I had to replace it. Replacing the cartridge this time did not resolve the error, nor did it allow me to at least continue printing.

The problem with this printer is down to a spring mechanism in the cartridge compartment. If it breaks (which it appears is common - check the forums on the HP website), it then proceeds to punch holes in the connector at the back of the compartment, and is made worse by re-inserting multiple times (as both HP's website and their tech support tell you to do). Once that happens, the printer is essentially worthless and you will need to replace it. If you have a persistent cartridge error this is likely the problem.

HP (online) service is awful and provides little help, apart from running through a bunch of 'standard procedures' and offering to sell you (at a higher price than their own website) an upgrade or a refurbished model at almost the same cost as a new one. There also seemed to be a lack of attention to the problem I was explaining to the operator as he kept asking me questions that I had already explained in my original question. I'm not sure where HP service is based, but it might have been a language problem.
They will also not refund a cartridge that is new, but now is useless as the printer no longer works, even though it is the printer that tells you to buy a new one... They did offer to exchange my cartridge under warranty, if they determined it was faulty (however I had just spent the previous 40 minutes with the same operator who told me it was a printer problem). I questioned why a new cartridge would help when it was a printer problem and never got a response...

The other problem I discovered was that the fax function of this printer does not work with a digital phone line such as cable phone or voice over IP.
