HP OfficeJet 7210 InkJet, Printer, Scanner, Fax, & Photo

Pros Loved it at first, good copy, and color until I had no print.
Cons Under replacement warranty, no NEW units, only RE-MANUFACTURED, meaning someone elses' reject.
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  Avoid this unit, they no longer manufacture it. Replacements only with re-manufactured units with extended warranty, IE: someone elses' overused reject.
I purchased this HP 7210 March 19, 2006 from Staples, I can't remember exactly how much I paid, I think it was $379.
27 days before the warranty expired I decided to order an extended warranty at a cost of $75.00. HP calls it a 3 yr. warranty, but it begins on the DAY of PURCHASE????? Which in effect gives you only 2 additional yrs.!!! My warranty now extends from Mar.2006 to Mar. 19,2009. (I thought the unit was covered for the first year anyway???? under the original purchase price.)
January 2007 I could not get unit to print, after many phone calls I discovered that the print cartridge (black) would not set in properly, due to the paper clip type wiring along the side wall of the cartridge holder had separated from the wall, thereby not allowing the cartridge to seat properly. I contacted HP and was told that a replacement unit would be sent by FedX the next day. The FIRST replacement arrived, but the print seemed to fade with each additional copy. Again I contacted HP, who tried to ck out a few things, eventually telling me I should try new black and color cartridges, which I had purchased from HP 6 mo. before, and were new and unopened. While the lady from HP waited I inserted the new cartridges....but there was no improvement. She then told me I need to go out and buy a NEW black cartridge, and try again. Which I did!!! Only to call HP back to report that the NEW cartridges made no improvement. I was told that I needed to buy a NEW printer!!! I agreed to an HP PRO L7780 due to arrive in 2 days (that being a Sat.). Sat. morning I checked HP on line and saw many feedback reports that were negative re: Pro L7780. I panicked, called HP to say I didn't want another printer with built-in problems and referred them to the feedback at their site. Well, lo and behold, while I am on the phone with a nice man, Sam from India, complaining that I wanted to know how to send this Pro L7780 back, Sam tries to encourage me to 'open' the box that just came. I do not want to open the box, I just want to send it back!! He pleaded with me, so I checked the box sitting in my living rm. and surprised to see a box containing a PhotoSmart C7280. I came back to Sam and told him of my shock, as I did not order the PhotoSmart, but as of that morning I was considering ordering the PhotoSmart after speaking with 3 or 4 HP representatives. Sam said, "it's a miracle", I agreed. Except now my credit card is billed $366.00 for the new unit, which has a duplexing module. Well, that is just what I wanted anyway. Lo and behold, there is no mention of double sided copy on the LCD MENU, NOR IN THE ACCOMPANYING USER GUIDE. So I am on the tel. again with HP, with another gentleman from India, who explains that in order to make a double sided copy I first have to copy l side then go to my computer and make arrangements to scan this side into the computer, then go back and make a copy of the 2nd side, scan it into the computer, then arrange for the computer to re-scan it back to my printer which then makes a double sided copy!!! 3 pieces of paper, since the original wasn't double sided to begin with, and all that extra ink. In the meantime I called HP to complain about the misleading phrase makes "DOUBLE SIDED copies". When the new HP representative learned I still had another year under my HP 7210 warranty, I agreed to try another replacement, now installed and giving the same lighter print. 3rd. unit going back. I found out manufacturing of this unit stopped production 1 yr before I purchased it!!!, so no new units avail. for replacement, only re-manufactured units. Waiting for resolution. CottageGal
