Lots of options for those printing photos and color projects

Pros Lots of features for printing color prints and photos
Cons Guzzles ink
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  The print feature is the star of the show. The other features do their job. The scanner is wider than the competition.
When I started a new position (a.k.a got a job) I was able to pick out my own printer. I was already networked into a laser printer so I started to think about meeting other needs that I would have specifically scanning, the ability to edit a document with OCR, and print in color.

I have both a laser and an all-in-one inkjet at home so I thought why not make this place feel like home. The all-in-one concept is truly an amazing convenience. The all-in-one gives you inkjet printing, copying in black or color ink, fax. The HP 7210 runs around $300 or less.

Who this is for
This is for someone who uses less than 5000 pages per month. I am the only one who uses this printer and I use about 2,000 pages a month with the majority being color copies.

This machine is geared toward users who print color projects and photos.

Aesthetics
Since I have no other options, I have my printer sitting on my desk, plugged directly into the computer. What I really hate is that the lid is really thick and gets hung up on the wall.

Other than that, it's a usual-looking printer. The functions are organized nicely on the front so you can use the all-in-one without the computer even being turned on.

Printing
There are three different printing options: Fast, Normal, and Best. I find no difference between normal and best. The fast prints out really fast but it's hard to read. It prints or copies up to 30 pages per minute (ppm) black and up to 20 ppm color.

I have tried inkjet and laser Avery labels, envelopes, photo paper, and color paper in the paper tray. I haven't had trouble with anything except the color paper. It has the same reaction every time. The first time I print it jams then goes through fine the second time.

I've been impressed with the paper feeder. It never grabs more than one piece of paper no matter how much is in the tray. I often print with just one piece of paper in the tray without problem.

It is designed for copy paper, inkjet paper, iron-on transfers, letterhead, photo paper, hagaki cards, and transparency films. The largest paper size is 8.5" x 24".

Color Copies
The whole point of a color printer is the color. I am extremely disappointed with the color output. Printing looks very different in print than it does on the screen. I need to use certain PM colors so it is very clear that the printer is not printing color accurately.

In an effort to save ink I often print in fast draft. The print quality of fast draft is so poor that I have to stop using fast draft because it's too difficult to read especially once the ink cartridge nears the end of its life.

Scanning
I love to have the ability to scan without having another machine on my desk. The printer has options to scan to different applications, depending what is loaded on your computer like Microsoft Word, Power Point, Photoshop or memory card.

You can also ask for the document to be scanned in OCR which allows you to edit the text so you won't have to retype a document. It doesn't do a very good job of keeping the fonts and doesn't transfer graphics at all.

Copy
One of the most annoying things about this printer is the noise that it makes when copying. I'm not sure why that is, but it's very loud initially which probably won't be a problem unless you're on the phone. Simply lift the lid or put the paper through the feeder to make a copy. You have the option of copying in black or in color.

There are also some cool features under the copy menu. You can change the copy size, lighten, darken, enhance, intensify color or print double sided.

Some other cool features can be found in the photo section.

The features that this all-in-one offers may save you a trip to the copy machine. It seems to take a little time to make a copy and as much as the ink is for the printer I usually just use the copier.

You "could" copy 50 pages with the paper feeder, but you'd probably have to replace the ink when you're done.

Color Photos
Not very impressed with the photo quality. I've only needed to use it a couple times. Perhaps the print would have been better using a photo cartridge rather than a standard color cartridge. I used the free photo paper that came with the printer. The photos weren't terrible but they looked like a color copy rather than a photo.

- Make a borderless copy
- Increase a photo to a full-size page by using the fill entire page feature however you must be using photo. The machine can detect normal paper and will print it with borders it doesn't have specialty entered.
- Copy several times on a page
- Enhance light areas.
- Make a poster by choosing enlarge/poster size. The printer will maintain the proportions of the original.

Memory Slots
There's a port on the front of the printer to directly plug your camera into for convenience. The camera port only supports USB-equipped digital cameras.

You can print and copy without a computer hooked to the printer. You can print directly form the memory card.

Fax
I don't have a need for faxing so I haven't tried it. The fax has the ability to print 2-sided originals, print confirmation reports, redial, speed dial, schedule a fax, receive a fax, forward to another number, set distinctive rings and fax over the internet.

Ink
The ink cartridges are really easy to change which is really good because they need to be changed often. I use the HP ink and it's around $60 for the black and color cartridge set. I go through lots of ink which is pretty normal for an inkjet I guess.

Power Protector
I am going to mention a power surge protector which includes a phone jack protector if your fax is hooked up and cable protector if there is a path.

Overall
I don't have any legitimate complaints about this printer. I haven't experienced any paper jams (except when using color paper). The printer is easy to use.

One thing that I miss with this printer that my other printer does have is sensible software. I guess there is some software that pops up now and then but it's not as helpful as the printer software that I'm use to. On the other hand, the buttons on the front of the machine are very explanatory.

This has some cool added features like borderless printing, poster size, and getting photos directly off of a memory card. The drawback is that you'll be using expensive photo paper and extra ink. The photos don't look like they came from a photo studio, but they're not that bad. I just have a problem with the colors not matching up to what I request. Not a big deal if you're using it for recreation, but not so good if you are printing something like your logo.

This is set up like you were going to be using it as a photo printer with the memory card features and resizing perks. Unfortunately, this is a color printer, not a photo printer.

What I don't care too much for is the large size. It's pretty big for a desk. However having a long printer gives you more room in the scanner area.

I am really indifferent about this printer and wouldn't necessarily recommend it over another. Should mine break today I'd probably entertain the idea of a laser all-in-one because it pains me how many inkjet cartridges I go through.

This isn't too bad for the price…$300 or less.
