The Bottom Line:
Excellent quality. Software install may not be needed. Works with online karaoke site. Apparently ready for MSN Messenger, AOL, etc.
As a low income person I needed a webcam that I could use with an online karaoke site. Cost was a factor as well as quality. I wanted one with at least 30fps at 640x480 for smooth videos to accompany my singing. I found a site that had open box new at $20 plus $5 shpg so I bought it, figured at that price I could not at least try it.
I first checked the HP site and downloaded the manuals and specs.
Having XP SP3 and a fairly new computer, my system met/exceeded the needed specs. I did NOT follow the suggested installation order, that being to install the software first. (I dislike bloated software, or that which you won't be using or don't need.) As soon as it was plugged in XP found the drivers for video and for audio. (I went to cpanel afterwards and under Audio I easily found and muted its mic, whereas I already have a mic.)
Without the software (from CD) being installed I then logged into the karaoke site. Their system could easily see my webcam. It works great and no flicker (as might be at slower fps). My lighting during most videos from the LCD monitor and a 12w light above (I live in an RV fulltime). In the morning, daylight shines through blinds 10 ft behind me and with my minimal front lighting this webcam it also works great. Color capture is very good and fairly accurate.
Apparently with the software the webcam can also track the movement of a person's face, I did not need that feature. Apparently also special effects can be added to videos via the software, but I also did not need that. Automatic focus seems to work very well whether face or objects are near or far. Prices vary from store to store but are well within fair pricing for the quality of this unit.
Microsoft shows it to be a compatible item for XP or Vista.
I luckily got it at a super low price, it was recognized by XP and I did not have to load any software. It sits nicely upon my wall mounted LCD monitor. Wish I had a budget to buy more for friends and family. No problems or dislikes. Has the HP brand name and their support, it's made in China.
