A Budget Printer: Cost Effective & Functional

Pros -Cost Effective<br>-Functional<br>-Quick Powerup Time<br>-Fast Print Speed
Cons -Software & Drivers stink, need to update from HP site
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  This is a great printer for the budget minded consumer. If all you need is a personal printer for a home or small office setting, this could be your machine.
I have been using the HP Laserjet P1006 for almost a year now. At the time I purchased it I had been using an inkjet printer, which is much too expensive in the area of ink. I have a small home office and I'm a self employed graphic designer, so I often print out documents from the internet for research, or proofs for my projects. Inkjets are OK for printing out color proofs, but they waste entirely too much ink for use as a general document printer.

I knew I needed a laser printer, as the cost of laser toner may be significantly higher than an inkjet ink cartridge, but so are the pages yielded per cartridge. A typical black inkjet cartridge at around $26 will yield 150 to 200 pages, while a typical black laser toner cartridge at around $63 will yield 1500 to 2000 pages. Much more economical.

The trouble for me came in deciding whether I needed a full color laser printer, starting at around $300 for the least expensive or one on special, versus a black printing only laser printer, for much less. Enter the LaserJet P1006, for $99 when I bought it. That was the perfect price for me, and I haven't looked back. It prints very quickly, takes only seconds (I think it says 8 seconds) warm up time from when you power it on to when it prints, and you can leave it on all the time. I've replaced the toner I think twice in almost a year, and I really do alot of printing.

Obviously you cannot print color on this things, so that's something of a downside, but of course you are not buying a color printer, is is made to be a black only printer. So you can't really call it a down side if it's not made for that. The only real complaint I've had was that the drivers and software does not work well out of the box. You'll probably need to go to HP's website to get the current drivers and software. And that can be a real pain. I really don't know why they do that.

Overall this printer is a great workhorse for a small office setting, like home or relatively small business. I'm not sure I'd use it for a network computer, it's probably best suited as a personal printer for just one PC. But I could be wrong, I'm just making an observation. I may work perfectly fine for network settings.
