DO NOT BUY an Hp P1006 until 2010
Pros
Fast start-up, excellent print quality, very compact & quiet.
Cons
Paper jams, spooler problem requires constant computer rebooting. AVOID P1006 LIKE THE PLAGUE!

The Bottom Line:
P1006 was current laser on my desk. Today it is being replaced by a Samsung ML-2510 due to annoying paper jams and computer rebooting to clear unprinted jobs.
Having owned & tested numerous Hp printers over the past 15 years I must sadly report that the latest compact low cost laser from Hp follows the EXACT same pattern as its predecessors:
CONS:
1. Driver problems. If Hp EVER puts a new printer on store shelves that doesn't include software problems, I'll faint from surprise. From past experience as an Hp beta tester, I've watched Hp printer drivers crash an entire Windows Operating System and learned that Hp sometimes takes up to 2 years after the shipment of a printer before they resolve driver issues.
Downloaded and installed a June 2008 updated driver because my P1006 forces me to reboot my computer after EVERY paper jam or data spooling problem. If a job doesn't print, trying to delete the print job is fruitless.
Updated driver is supposed to fix these problems. JUNE 2008 UPDATED DRIVER DOES NOT FIX THE PROBLEMS. Like I said above, Hp might need until the year 2009 or longer to resolve this.
2. Paper jams. As the owner of Dell, Lexmark & Samsung lasers plus having tested dozens of other laser printers, sorry to report that this Hp P1006 is the ONLY laser I have that sometimes grabs more than one sheet of paper which results in a paper jam. Adding to the frustration, the "supposed" reset button on the top left side does not restore the print job after you resolve the jam. You must turn the printer off & on, which means you'll lose unprinted job(s).
3. Shrinking toner cartridge capacity. Hp must think we're idiots and don't realize that with every new series of printers, they're providing less toner.
Fortunately, a few clever people on my staff seem to always find ways we can refill cartridges with lots more toner than Hp or anyone else offers. We sell cartridges filled to the max with MICR toner containing magnetic particles so you can print checks that will scan at retail stores or banks (provided you have check-printing software like ChecksNet). Our MICR toner is darker than regular laser toner and it can be used to print anything you'd print with an Hp CB435A cartridge for the P1006 printer.
PROS:
1. Fast start-up time. Most lasers take 15 or 20 seconds to start printing. The P1006 seems to start a print job in less than 8 seconds every time.
2. Excellent print quality. Razor sharp text on documents without any adjustments to printer settings.
3. Very compact. I've yet to see any smaller laser printer.
4. Quiet operation. Only laser I've seen that makes less noise is the Samsung ML-1630.
5. Silver & grey finish matches most other computer equipment today.
Other:
As expected from Hp, they find new ways to try and intimidate consumers so you will only buy their over-priced toner cartridges. Aside from the computer chip on the cartridge that is supposed to prevent you from buying cartridges from whomever you choose, they've added a new gimmick. You might see a random pop-up asking if you are aware that the cartridge in your printer is not a genuine Hp cartridge. Since I have been using one of my CheckToner MICR cartridges for the past 4 months, I know the cartridge works perfectly so I laugh at the pop-ups.
