The Bottom Line:
Easy inexpensive black/white printing done from the comfort of your own home office
The HP P1005 LaserJet printer is a basic home user printer that will produce decent overall quality black printing at a fast rate. Due to the compatibility with Mac, Windows, and Linux based software almost any networked or home based operating system will be able to setup and use the HP P1005 LaserJet printer. I must mention several models before this did NOT work with other operation systems other than windows which did cause several issues when networking and using several systems at home.
Setup & Installation
the printer cable is NOT included in the box, so be sure to either have a USB 2.0 cable on hand or purchase one before you bring it home if not you can purchase one for about $20. Included within the printer were all the basic installation software, 1 black (35A) print cartridge, and power cord. The HP P1005 LaserJet is very easy to setup right out of the box. Similar to most plug and play printers, there are no fixed installation procedures that you have to follow, you can install the drivers first or let the machine prompt you for them when you plug in the USB cable. The printer includes a startup guide detailing steps and instructions to help those who are Computer Illiterate. Similar to other manufacturer’s there is a need to remember the model numbers of your ink cartridges. The software is unable to detect the type of consumables installed automatically.
External Construction
the HP P1005 LaserJet is comprised of a white hard plastic shell, although durable and sleek looking the buttons require a bit of finesse or smaller fingers to press as they are somewhat tiny. You almost have to apply the pressure in a particular way to get the results you desire, which can cause some frustration when trying to operate the machine. Due to the smaller size of this laser printer it should fit anywhere on your desk without issue.
Personal Experience
The printer spools information from the source at a decent rate, thus keeping the printing process at a heightened performance. Its performance can be compared to a laser printer that you can find for 200-300 bucks at times. I found the printer to be quite versatile, when it came to paper handling like: Letter, legal, executive, postcards, envelopes, labels, cardstock, and transparencies. The printer is not perfect as sometimes it jams occasionally, but the speed of the printouts on draft mode (lowest quality setting) kick out in seconds, higher quality will cost you more time and cost per print, but the results are apparent. I did find that the printer’s bottom loading tray seemed to have trouble when using envelopes and cards as they either jammed or feed incorrectly when placed as a group, to alleviate this I would feed each envelope one at a time.
The bottom feed tray only handles about 150 sheets of paper at a time regardless of what the website might claim of being able to hold a larger capacity, which again is gear towards a home user, rather than a full ream of plain paper sheet loading capacity of a higher usage unit. I would also give credit to the printer’s claim of pages per minute, as the speeds were somewhat of an typical laser printer, basically not slow on warm up nor on multiple pages it just continues to feed at a good rate, however I don’t want to give you the impression that it is blazing fast or completely able to handle any large task you give it.
I tried several other papers including transparences, which by the way included pie graphs and charts, they actually came out better than expected. The text was readable, clear, and not smudged. Several projects I worked on included a larger than average volume of printing plain text pages and during larger quantities of printing I felt that the pages towards the middle and end seemed faded. The best way I could describe this would be fading of a car brakes during extreme heat or over usage, it seemed that the ink was not as dark or crisp during longer sessions of printing. So I didn’t find the claims or recommendations of using this printer for small businesses to hold much water, as it did not seem to handle larger volumes of printing in a manner that was satisfactory to the user.
Manufacture Support
HP has done well at the main website, which answered questions and provided the ability to purchase additional peripherals I may need in the future. I felt it necessary to give HP props on the assistance it provided when I was trying to update my personal wireless network to include both computers on the same system. I found a firmware patch online at the HP site which allowed me to quickly correct the problem and get back to working with my printer from both units. I also found that the manufacture had a 1-800 number that I could call incase I had additional problems, or email them for a fast response.
Recommendation
Due to the versatility of the HP P1005 LaserJet ability to be used on several of the major operating networks & systems it makes a good buy for anyone looking for a home use basic laser printer. This printer will meet most of your personal needs from a home user’s standpoint, but would not meet demanding needs of a small business as claimed. The paper handling is flexible enough to cover a wide array of personal printing demands, but limited when it comes to handling larger paper sizes such as 11 x 17. At about 3 cents a print the cost effectiveness of the printer is within a cheaper or below average cost to the user. Being a smaller printer it should be able to fit anywhere within a computer desk area without being overbearing or a nuisance. I feel the printer warms up fast enough to get the work done without waiting around very long. The processor speed of the unit compliments the overall performance when printing several pages in a row. Within reason the printer competes within today’s market and will facilitate a home office while solving a cost effective problem to basic home printing needs.
