The Bottom Line:
I would buy this computer again, in a heartbeat!
This machine is HIGHLY UNDER-rated in almost every review I read about it. I can't tell you how satisfied I am with this machine.
This is no "barn burner", but the machine performs extremely well for what it's designed to do. If you are looking for a good machine in the $499 price range. You will do no better than this machine.
I purchased this machine at Staples for $499 with a series of discounts and rebates. Beware that Best Buy has an almost identical model available, but the Best Buy model lacks built-in wireless-N and it only has Vista Home Basic installed vs. this machine's Vista Home Premium. Both machines sell for the same price.
The only 2 gripes I have about this machine are the low contrast of the letters and symbols imprinted on the silver keyboard keys, and the fact that the lustrous piano black body is such a fingerprint magnet.
While the silver keys are easily discernable in bright light, in a darkened room you will be challenged to make out the letters and symbols on each key. There is no on board LED night light and you only have the glow of the display to go by.
I'd like to mention the keyboard is silky smooth to the touch and it provides good tactile feedback. The keyboard does not feel cheap.
The track point is also extremely smooth. If you like a less-smooth track point surface, this may be an issue for you.
It's true what they say about the battery. You get about 3-hours, at best, on battery power. (2.5-hours seems more realistic) The battery charged quickly, though. I have the standard battery, but I think another extended life battery is available. I don't need it and haven't checked, so you may want to, if that is important to you.
Screen is perfect. No broken pixels, or anything like that.
LightScribe drive is a real plus on this laptop. It should be standard on all drives, if you ask me. Drive is 8x speed, which is slightly faster than the 6x speed drives found in most other machines in this price range.
There is no integrated bluetooth or fire-wire port. Not a big deal at this price point and both are easily available through USB devices.
Although the machine is loaded with a 32-bit OS, you can install a 64-bit OS if you wish to. The machine has 3Gig memory and is upgradable to 4Gig.
HDD is a whopping 320G. Plenty of room for lots of pictures and music files. Machine downloads movies in a snap!
There is a built in web-cam that works pleasingly well. I was able to video conference with no issues.
There is also a built in 5-in-1 media card reader. Works as designed.
I'm not sure what else to report.
If you are looking for a smoking gaming machine, this is not it. Computer geeks will probably not be satisfied.
If you are an average, general computer user who is looking for a decent machine without breaking the bank, this computer has lots of built in value and could easily replace an entry level desktop for around the same price. This is a perfect machine for your mom, your daughter, your sister, a school teacher, or your non-techie girlfriend.
It makes a good first laptop.
Neither of the issues I mentioned earlier in this review would steer me away from making this purchase again, and I highly recommend the machine.
