A Good Scanner for the Price
Pros
Affordable, good quality scans
Cons
A little slow, hate the accompanying software
Recommended it?
Yes
Our old scanner, a Plustek, died a few months back. My toddler did something to it--need I say more? So, when I found myself in the market for a new scanner, I wanted something of equal or better quality. I found it with the HP Scanjet 3200C.
The HP Scanjet 3200C offers 600 dpi optical resolution, and 30 bit color, giving bright, crisp scans that are great for web publishing or sending straight to the printer. Unfortunately, unlike my old Plustek, the scanning software does not allow for changes in resolution or brightness/contrast before scanning--all such adjustments must be made after scanning, in your photo editing program.
It's a big thing--takes up a lot more space on my desk. But it's reliable, and it gives a good scan. It's a "plug and play" type accessory, so no fiddling around to get it up and running. Like my Plustek, the HP gives the option of rotating, resizing, or cropping the image before sending it to your Photo editing program.
The HP Scanjet 3200C comes with the Adobe PhotoDeluxe software, and that is really my only complaint about this scanner. I don't like the Adobe software--it is a hassle to convert files to "readable" formats, and the default format is not recognized by any program I've run across. Worse, even its "readable" formats aren't really--if I want to use a .jpg from PhotoDeluxe, I have to import it to Image-in or another photo program, and REconvert it. This makes scanning for publishing far more hassle than it should be. This wouldn't even be a complaint if I could get the HP Scanjet 3200C to recognize/work with any of my other photo editing software. Unfortunately, it refuses to allow me to add another "destination program," so I am stuck taking that extra step.
The HP does take a bit longer to render a scan than my Plustek did, but the difference isn't so great that it would keep me from recommending this scanner to other folks who are looking for a good price on a nice scanner for family pictures and such.
