HP delivers a solid burner.

Pros Very quiet drive, nice speeds. Not too pricey.
Cons Supposedly does NOT burn past 650MB (74 Minutes).
Recommended it? Yes
Although it's an older model now, the 8100i has been a solid toy of mine for several months. Considering I don't have any SCSI devices (save for a very old HP Scanner, which still works amazingly well) and run UDMA hard drives, the 8110i CD-Writer Plus is an excellent reader and burner.

The 8110i uses a tray loading mechanism and has the following speeds:
24x Read
4x Write (CD-R discs)
2x Rewrite (CD-RW discs)

I've burned well over 60 discs and have only hit two or three bad discs (usually because I tested the limits of burning while running several other programs at once).

For me, whenever I burn (aka record/write) CDs, I usually leave the PC alone and come back when the CD is done. If you're like me then, this burner is for you. I've actually run a few things in the background, such as instant messaging programs and the occasional browser. Still no problems (I have run the burner with a Pentium II-300 system without problems).

The addition of rewritable capability is a godsend. Whenever I need to burn video projects or files onto CD, I no longer need to waste blank CD after blank CD. Burning onto rewritable discs with the 8100i takes a bit longer (it only can rewrite at 2x). Using the included Adaptec EZ CD Creator software, you can "erase" the contents of a CD-RW and start over. A "full" erase takes about half an hour (!) while a "quick" erase takes about 2 minutes. Perfect for transferring files to and from work/school or otherwise on CD media.

One of the better creative uses for using the burner is for compiling a "favorite tracks" audio CD or just backing up old projects, image collections etc. Whether you decide to pick the 8100i or another HP burner, rest assured that you are buying a good product with solid online support.
