Outstanding software for an OK product

Pros better than a zip drive, gets the job done
Cons reliability an issue,
Recommended it? Yes
HP, in creating it's SureStore CD Writer Plus 8100i has integrated ease-of use in installation and loads of functionable programs, while at the same time, offering a somewhat reliable performing CD-R as well as CD-RW burner. What more can you ask for???

Software BUNDLE

HP must have created the bundle with the business user in mind. The 8100 i boasts the usual CD-R basics from Adaptec, including Easy CD Creator and DirectCD, and a few exclusive extras from HP.

Along with the Adaptec utilities is HP's very own Simple Trax, which is a backup and archiving program that allows you to quickly and painlessly transfer any file or folder to a disc (click and drag).
Then create a Windows Explorer-like directory on your
hard drive for easy organization and tracking.

HP offers another great program: Disaster Recovery. Disaster Recovery allows users to store essential files on a recovery CD in case of a hard drive failure.

HP also bundles the Adaptec Easy Creater Program which allows the user to effortlessly burn data files by clicking on the files, folders that are to be burned on the CD-R. The Adaptec CD creator also allows the user to burn an already made CD to a newly minted CD-R.

So folks, you'll be able to burn that 2Pac CD in less than 20 minutes at 4 X write.

There is a 2 X write function which seems more reliable but takes twice as long. And, you can even have the burner test-write the CD before the burning process proceeds.

SETUP

Like most internal EIDE drives, the 8100i is a cinch to set up. HP provides an easy-to-follow installation poster to get you through the process without much pain.

CONS
My 8100i was at times faulty, as the burner failed to burn certain data files, and as a result rendered my CD-R useless. The problem was due to a buffer error underun, which at the moment perplexes myself and the HP technical support staff.

The 8100i also did not perform too well at 4 X write speeds; there were a few incidents where the burner just died and shut off and the program crashed.

Overall, however, the 8100i is an alright performing piece of copying and writing CD-R and CD-RW. Included in the package is a CD-RW, a rewriteable. Mind you, RW's can be read primarily in CD-RW and newer CD-Roms. I recently purchased a 40 X Rom and the RW does not read from it.
