Great if discounted and you can get it to work
Pros
Great AOI printer if discounted and you can get it to work on your network.
Cons
EPIC FAIL - the drivers are very bad. ADF jams easily.
Recommended it?
No
The Bottom Line:
Difficult ADF. Crazy stupid problems getting it to work well when shared on a network. Very High Quality prints! The engineers weren't done with this printer when it was shipped.
I'll update this review as I get more experience with the printer, but after one day of owning it here's what I know:
Positive Comments
1 - The "Digital Filing" feature is great! You setup 10 different front panel hotkeys to scan to a file on a directory on your network. I wouldn't bother with the ADF if I didn't have this printer on Ethernet.
2 - The prints come out nice and fast. Draft mode is good enough for 95% of what I do so that's how I set it up for default printing.
3 - The Best mode is really sharp and dark text that easily exceeds my expectations. It is much slower because it pauses between pages to let the ink dry.
4 - Setup wasn't too bad. It did go through about 20 minutes of self-calibration and aligning before it was useful, but it will only do that one time. I use Windows Vista Home and Windows Vista Business on my two computers at my home business. Both work the same. I installed the software off the internet, not from the CD's that came in the box. I also updated the firmware in the printer while I was at it. I haven't had any software issues at all.
5 - It is a very decent copy machine. The copies come out as fast as any home copier that I've used and they look great.
6 - I won't use if for home photos much, but a test print said it is definitely capable of producing great photos. The only reason I keep HP's print software around is to print photos to this specific printer.
7 - The embedded web server status software works well. I like how it shows how much ink has been used and approximately how many pages can be printed before you'll need to replace a cartridge. Coming from an HP 6980, I like the cheaper cartridges and/or spending a little more and getting the XL capacity cartridges.
8 - Price! I paid $129.99 with free shipping from NewEgg which has a great return policy. It is a great printer for that price. I would not have bought it at its $399 list price.
Negative Points
1 - The Automatic Document Feeder is prone to jams if anything out of the ordinary is placed in it. This wouldn't be so bad except that jams are nearly impossible to clear! You can't roll the rollers forward or even pull the paper out by hand. The paper is clamped between the rollers and won't come out without ripping. This is very nearly unacceptable, except that I've resigned myself to just using the ADF for scanning regular size unwrinkled documents that are properly lined up. Even after all that, I know there is a 1" x 2" ripped off piece of paper inside the ADF that it won't spit out. But - it is working fine within its limits. The ADF likes to pull documents into itself just a little crooked. This is one reason why it is prone to jamming. Take a little care to line up the documents and it works OK.
2 - The black ink cartridge was difficult to install to get it seated down properly. The color cartridges were a piece of cake.
3 - Keep the box that it shipped in because it may have to be sent back for replacement.
4 - Forget about scanning at 1200 bpi or greater, especially if connected with USB. I did a 2400 bpi test of a simple photo and it probably took 30 minutes. 300 or 600 bpi scans over Ethernet are very fast.
Update after 2 weeks of ownership
The double-sided ADF scanning is a wonder to behold! That is - when it works, which is most of the time. I still sometimes have impossible-to-clear paper jams on the ADF.
It produces FANTASTIC PHOTOS! The prints look even better than what I get done on the big Kodak machine at Target. The colors are rich and the images are very sharp. I've used 6-ink Canon printers for all of my previous photo prints and have been very pleased, but this printer beats the Canon prints.
EPIC FAIL: This printer is impossible to manage at home. A new problem started today when the kids need to print graphs from Excel for a science project. It only prints an inch or two of the graph then spits out the page! I had it working at one time by disabling printer spooling and "Advanced" features of the driver, but now it always does it no matter what application or computer I use. I may be sending this damn printer back to NewEgg. DO NOT BUY.
