Officejet Pro L7680- Solid All-In-One for Your Office/Personal Needs

Pros works well, easy installation, cheap!
Cons made from cheap plastic parts
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  I would recommend the L7680 InkJet Printer by HP because it's easy and cheap!
My printer/fax/scanner/copier broke down at work and so I made my boss buy me a new one.  I was sort of dreading getting the new one because I knew I'd have to set it up myself.  I will fully admit that I am a total wuss when it comes to having to set up hardware or even download software.  My boss bought the HP Officejet Pro L7680 All In One for my office, and it replaced the HP Officejet 7410xi All in One which served us well.

Pro L7680 came in a huge colourful HP box.  I was worried about the installation but it was fairly easy.

Installation:

First I removed all of the tape and the packing materials.  I will say that there is tape everywhere and I missed some key spots, so be careful and ensure that you've taken all tape off.

Next I installed the control panel faceplate.  It simply snaps into place and there was absolutely no hassle.

Step 3 is to install the document feeder tray.  I had a little bit of a problem with this.  It seems to me that the plastic the printer itself is made of is cheap, and it was hard to pop this tray into place.  It eventually worked but I felt like I was going to break it off.

Installing the ink cartridges was very different from the ones I used with my previous All-In-One.  There are four ink cartridges and they snap into place sideways under the lower right panel of the printer.  There is a blue, pink, yellow and black cartridge.  Because the colours are separate, it is supposed to be cheaper to replace colour cartridges.  Snapping them in seemed a bit awkward to me, but I managed.

Installing the printheards was fairly awkward too.  They come in little basket-like printer cartridges and you have to really snap them into place.  However, if I can manage to do this, anyone can.

Connecting the power cord, the ethernet cable and the phone cable was fairly easy.  It looks like the wireless set up would be more difficult. However, HP gives you a wonderful map to show you how to hook everything up.  It's fairly simple to follow.

Overall installation took about an hour or so and I was ready to load the software into my computer.

The Software

There are three set up disks depending on your Operating System.  So, if you have a Mac, don't worry, you are covered.  The software installation took awhile.  I'd say it took at least 30 minutes to load the applications on my computer.  When the software is close to being installed, the printer will run some tests.  The tests are noisy and sort of obnoxious, but once all the print-outs are done you will get a paper stating that you're printer set-up is successful.

How it Works/Problems/Usage

I use my All-In-One mostly for printing and copying, but I also utilize it for faxes occasionally.  The guide book shows how to configure the fax.  I had a few problems.  My main problem was that my boss shares a line with my outgoing fax line and so everytime his line would ring the All-In-One would ring and it really annoyed me.  Plus, I originally plugged the connector to the wrong outlet and it didn't work (stupidity on my part). However, using the guide-book I figured out how to turn off the ringer and plug the fax in successfully.

The tray that holds the paper was problematic for me.  I couldn't get the tray to expand enough to hold standard copy paper and when I tried to run the print tests, the paper kept getting jammed.  It took me about 20 minutes to fiddle with the plastic sliding paper holders in order to get the paper to fit properly.  Once I figured it out, it was smooth sailing.  However, I attribute this problem again to the cheap plastic which the printer is made from.

My copier worked as soon as I got the software installed.  So did the scanner.  I usually use the scanner for personal reasons like scanning pictures and storing them on my computer.  However, occasionally I need to scan a document too.

The control panel is actually very well divided.  There is a SCAN Menu, a FAX Menu, a Copy Menu and a Photo Menu.  Each is fairly simple to follow and I've had no problems with any of them.

The quality of the black and white and colour print is very good.  I used some photo paper to print out a picture and it dried within about 90 seconds and looked very nice.  As for plain black and white, it's great quality.  The ink dries extremely fast and I've had no problem with smudging.

There guide for the L7680 is the same for Officejet Pro L7500/L7600/7700.  It is very detailed and informational.  The guide comes in 4 languages too.

Overall

Overall, aside from a few start up problems the HP Officejet Pro L7680 InkJet Printer has served me well.  I would recommend it to anyone who needs an All-In-One machine.  The best part about this machine is that it's cheap.  We paid under $150 for it!
