The little printer that could

The Bottom Line:  This is the perfect product if you're looking for a no-frills, reliable little printer. This little guy is brilliant!
After numerous bad experiences with inkjet printers, I decided that all the trouble and expense was not worth the pretty colors and went with laser type for my most recent printer instead. I'm a student whose main concern is for my printer to be able churn out pages upon pages of text - clearly, quickly, and RELIABLY.

I chose this printer because it fulfilled this very basic need, was unbelievably well-priced, and is small and compact. The HP LaserJet 1018 is about 36.5cm wide, 20cm tall, and 21cm deep with the paper tray folded up. The tray adds 12 cm when it is open flat. As you may already know, it only prints in black.

The 1018 has two trays, one that will hold up to 150 sheets of paper up to a size of 8.5" x 14", and an envelope tray for printing legal, #10, or executive size envelopes, and postcards. In addition to paper, envelopes, and postcards, this printer also accepts photo paper, labels, cardstock, and transparencies.

The 1018 connects to your computer using a high-speed USB 2.0 port, for which you have to purchase a cable separately for about $20. Not ideal, but not horrifying either considering that the printer itself was less than $100 and comes with a half-capacity toner cartridge, which is at least a $40 value. The full-capacity toner cartridges are $85 (here in Canada), and are good for up to 2000 pages.

I was personally amazed by how long the half-capacity cartridge hung on for. I'm a law student and have wrung an obscene number of pages of notes and cases through this little printer, and I'm still only on my second toner cartridge, including the first one that came with the printer. Installing the cartridge couldn't be easier. You just flip open the top lid, slide the cartridge in (there's a track to guide you, you cannot possibly put it in the wrong way), and when it gets to the bottom, just rotate the cartridge slightly downward until you hear a click (it practically does this part on its own), and then close the lid.

Taking an old cartridge out is just as simple. HP also has a recycling program that is very easy to participate in. You simply pop the old cartridge into the new cartridge's box, tape it shut, apply the pre-paid postage label, and drop the box off at any post office.

The printer is on and ready to go in only a few seconds upon hitting the power button. According to the HP website, the first page is done in 10 seconds, and subsequent pages are printed at up to 12 pages per minute. You can choose between two levels of print resolution - 600dpi and FastRes1200. I rarely ever find it necessary to use the highest resolution, as text is perfectly crisp at 600dpi and there is little discernible difference between the two. I save the 1200dpi resolution for printing tasks such as resumes and cover letters, and final drafts of term papers.

The printer driver is easy to install via a CD, and provides some useful options such as printing on both sides (can do flip-up booklets as well), scaling, and watermarks.

More than a year later, this printer has yet to act finicky or temperamental, which is a first for me (my sister's laser printer gives her occasional grief, which I hear all about in gory detail). Even with paper jams (caused entirely by me, don't ask) or me turning the printer off in the middle of print jobs, it's bounced right back, ready for more. All I have to do in any case is turn it off and back on (after roughly yanking the jammed paper out), no flashing red lights or weird sounds, no hard feelings. I've had many a printer let me down before while trying to print a 20 page paper due in oh, about 25 minutes, and have wasted too much time with useless trouble-shooting booklets. This little guy has never let me down.

I can't express my love and affection for the HP LaserJet 1018 enough. If you're looking for a no-frills, extremely reliable and low-maintenance printer, look no further. You'd be hard pressed to get better value for your money. When I can afford it, I'll be pleased to try out one of HP's color laser printers, but for now this little one is all I need.
