HP Got It Almost Perfectly Right
Pros
Business-class brushed alum. case, great keybd, display, wt, battery EXCELLENT. Wireless and Bluetooth incl.
Cons
Not hi-pwr, gaming machine. Webcam very poor. Should come with 2GB RAM option (1GB's standard).
Recommended it?
Yes
The Bottom Line:
Know what you're buying: a NETBOOK! Terrific for travel, great at home, perfect at university. HP rocks!
Bought this HP Mini 2140 in mid-March 2009, have been using it (as have several other very techie-types who are pickier than I am -- and that's saying a LOT) ever since. Initial reason for purchase was to take overseas on multi-week research trip requiring a computer that involved (literally) planes, boats AND trains...So I wanted to lighten up my load from the usual 7 - 8 lb laptop, and save space besides.
You can find the specs on-line; I bought mine from the HP website, as I'd done business with them before, and had a very positive experience. This time was no different: a very good experience.
BE AWARE: there is NO internal optical drive (CD or DVD) -- saves weight and you can use external one via USB.
It's a beautiful looking mini computer (Netbook, as they are often called),
Battery: Got the 12-cell battery, and the life is very acceptable (around 8 hours with wireless but not Bluetooth on). 12-cell slants up keyboard to near-perfect angle for long hours of work.
Keyboard: a real deal-breaker or maker for me, makes this deal: it is absolutely excellent, close to full-size, and the touch is terrific, as is the texture.
Mouse/Mouse Buttons: It takes adaptation to use this two-button (on each side of touchpad), but the click is much less stiff than (for example) an Acer or even an ASUS. The buttons are also raised more above touchpad than other netbooks: wonderful!
Screen/Display: HP knows what they're doing here - even though it is glossy. It is sharp, crisp, clear, superb -- having recently had eye surgery (cataracts), I was deeply concerned about this. I shouldn't have been: this is a great screen. I should say I also have an Acer and the sexy (and you'll-go-blind-trying-to-read-anything) Sony P530. The HP blasts them out of the pack. I've tried a Samsung NC10 (matte screen model), and it's the only screen that comes close to HP's.
Webcam: Ugh. WHERE are HP's TECHNO PEOPLE on THIS ONE? A 0.3 megapixel CAM??? Who is zooming who here? Every other netbook has at least 1.3 MP webcams. Now - do I care? Not so much. I use it so rarely that it is of little significance to me. If you're a Skype video-chat person or someone who uses video IM'g, conferencing, records video, etc., you will not be happy.
Speakers: Um. Well - weak. But I use earbuds and things are fine.
Hard Drive/USB ports: 160GB is fine for most of the world. Get jump/flash drives if you need more. Hubs are available, too - because this baby is short on USB ports (one less than most others - it has 2, not 3). I wish it had 3, but this was not a deal-breaker for me.
One of my techie friends says the HD spins slowly; I suppose one could replace it with higher rpms (7200) or a solid state if you wished - but for my purposes, I couldn't tell you if it's slower or faster.
Video: Everything I've watched runs fine, but I do NOT make huge demands re video.
Photo-editing: Photos display crisply enough for editing and that's what I care about. I am not a photographer, but I take a LOT of pictures!
