The Bottom Line:
The Hitachi 43FDX01B is a quality HDTV for a very reasonable price. I would highly recommend it.
I have had this TV for about a year now, and I have really enjoyed it. I did a bit of studying about the differences between the available models about a year ago, and decided on Hitachi as they had the brightest, most brilliant color at a very reasonable price (~$1800).
I got this at Circuit City, and I am glad that I reviewed the setup with the salesman, as the setup on this set was much different from what I was used to with traditional TVs. I used monster cable connections for all components and ran the audio output through a Pioneer surround sound system, which really enhances the sound.
The sound quality of the internal speakers is not great, but when mixed with a decent home theater system, it really makes a difference.
I noticed that due to the rather low level of resolution from VCR tapes, the picture is extremely fuzzy when using the VCR, which came as a bit of a dissapointment, as I already had a pretty big VHS collection.
However, this set really shines when matched with a progressive scan DVD player. Putting on DVDs such as Bug's Life or Toy Story really shows-off the capabilities of the HDTV. The colors are brilliant and even fast-moving scenes are always very clear.
My system is hooked-up to a standard DirecTV dish, and the picture is pretty good, yet not quite as good as on the DVD. On some stations there is a slight "shadow effect" especially on fast-moving scenes.
The Hitachi 43FDX01B is a very convenient size, as it fits perfectly in my available space in my family room, and has a sleek, modern appearance.
The remote is pretty simple to use, and the available functions on this set are abundant (many of which I don't even use).
I would highly recommend this unit to anyone looking for a high-quality HTDV set at an affordable price.
