Pros
Perfect size screen for average size living room. Very sleek, great looking set.

The Bottom Line:
I believe that if you can find this set on sale or otherwise advertised under $2000, then you will get the most bang for your buck.
I've been researching the whole HDTV thing for the last few months since my trusty old 11 year old 27" Toshiba was on it's way out. I've been kind of partial to Toshiba, their products I feel are top shelf, without paying top price. I decided on a 43" standard format screen because I felt that anything larger would be too big for my living room and anything smaller, well, I may as well just replace my 27" tube TV. I had to have HDTV even though I would stick with my standard cable signal for now but at least I could enjoy watching crystal clear DVD's through my new Toshiba DVD player I bought 3 months ago. Anyway, I kept my eyes and ears open for any new developments on the Hitachi 43FDX01B and Toshiba's equal. The latter has been retailing for about $300 more. Then it happened. Circuit City released their weekend ad for the Hitachi with a sale price of $1849 (normally $2099) which included a free DVD player (a $119) value! That was a selling point that led me to my decision. Plus I previously heard from a reliable source that Toshiba uses components made by Hitachi so that clinched it even more. I also bought the matching stand for an additional $149, kind of pricey I thought, but what the heck If I was going to splurge a little why not do it right? Now for the TV itself, yeah the picture is a little bright, but the picture quality that comes with, even through an analog signal totally justifies that. And DVD's? Don't even get me started. Just make sure you get the component cables instead of the S-video cable for viewing DVD's to get the absolute best picture this set has to offer. The speakers I guess are okay, but I mainly pipe everything through full home theater stuff anyway. The onscreen menu is loaded with a lot of bells and whistles many of which I would not rather spend my time learning. There are 4-5 buttons on the remote (which by the way is very ergonomically friendly), that are not explained in the manual, but they are not obtrusive looking by any means. Bottom line here is I believe I made the right purchase at the right time. Plus, with the extended warranty I also bought, I have the comfort of knowing that come 2006 when everything is supposed to go digital, I'll be ready and not obsolete! Why wait for technology to keep advancing and prices to drop when you can and should enjoy it now?!
