The Bottom Line:
Look at this set first, shop around, compare, and I promise you'll come back and buy this set, and be totally happy and satisfied with your decision.
As with the first reviewer for this product, I also research anything costly, especially cars and electronics. I had most of my home audio stolen and decided to set up a home theatre with the insurance $ and some out of my pocket, to ensure the best quality I could afford.
Since it took a month to settle my claim, I had ample time to shop around for the best price, brand and basically set, to go with the audio I selected, which I'll review elsewhere.
I went to practically every retail store that sold tv's in Atlanta it seemed. I originally was looking at a 36" Sony, but after seeing how great giant screens were at The Big Screen Store, I decided to move up in screen size.
I decided Sony's are great-picture wise and 'bloodline' but expensive for the features, heavy and I couldn't afford anyhting bigger than a 36 inch which was going for 25-2600 bucks. I set my must haves-couldn't be too heavy, since I move about once a year; I couldn't be lugging a giant 350 lb tv around the country with me. Must be hdtv ready, must have great picture out of the box, must be 16:9 (I decided after a while of research), must be a good sized screen and above all, I must get a deal on it, since aside from my car, a boat, a watch and a plane ticket to New Zealand, I can't ever remember spending this much on anything at once.
To get to the point: I am extremely happy with my choice and am REALLY looking forward to hooking up my 5.1 system to it. I compared everything in the $1299-3500 range, and this was it. I found the lowest price on the internet, and had Sears match it, and deliver it with the (overpriced) stand. It was great right out of the box. With a few minor adjustments, it was incredible. The sound is excellent, so hooked up to surround sound, it will be amazing. The remote is simple to learn, the lighting feature is handy, and the features are practical- not too much 'fluff'. It has magic focus, which focuses the image for you if needed, will set everything up for you automatically, has several modes and aspects, will accomadate every compnent imaginable, and has 'perfect picture' for those that don't want to mess with customizing the picture. It has a sensor that adjusts the picture according to the amount of light in the room. The letterboxing is actually grey, so as to not burn into the screen. I cannot overemphasize the simplicity and ease I had setting this system up.
To summarize: This is like seeing for the first time for me. For the $, you can't do any better. I am now a big fan of Hitachi, and would urge anyone in the market for a TV to compare this line of projecton TVs to anything else, to see there is no comparison. Although I got the 43" due to the size of my room, the larger models are even more awesome. This set blows away anything in it's price range, and most everything several thousand dollars above it. I originally was turned off by the silver/grey cabinet, but you really don't notice it due to the insane picture you're watching. I would have been so sorry if I had spent what I had planned to on that 36" Sony. I'm definitely not bashing Sony, in the least, but this TV is so far superior and so less expensive. I'll never go to the movies again.
Do not buy a projection TV without looking at this line of Hitachis or you'll be sorry! And to throw in a plug, my experience in buying from Sears, who I had thought of as a crappy store, was excellent. I was so impressed with their help and service I sent a letter to the store manager, which I've never done. Matching my lowest price was just icing on the cake.
