HDTV nice, other channels poor

Pros Looks nice, sounds nice, easy-to-use menus, multiple aspect ratios, two-tuner nice for PIP.
Cons Pixelated, blurry picture on everything but HDTV signals.
Recommended it? No
The Bottom Line:  I expected to be excited by quality of HDTV pictures and more than satisfied with quality of non-HDTV pictures. So far, I'm not.
I purchased this TV on Jan 31 from the Video Only store in Beaverton, OR. I was impressed with the overall look of the TV, and I liked the feature set. The price seemed reasonable as well. When I took the TV home that day, I set it up and proceeded to watch whatever was available via my expanded basic cable service. As expected, the picture wasn't quite as sharp as what I was used to on my 27" Sony TV. The colors were nice, though, and the one DVD I watched (Saving Private Ryan) looked OK. Knowing that I was having digital cable (HD) installed in a few days, I decided to withold judgement at this point.

Yesterday, I had my digital cable installed (HD), and now I'm really confused... Yes, the HDTV channels look nice (not great, but nice - displaying at 1080i instead of 720p - not sure if this is why). Most of the other channels, though, look crummy (blurry might be the better word). At this point, I'm thinking of returning the TV. From a technical standpoint, I think it's simply too advanced for the available programming. The analog signals just don't look good when blown to such a large proportion, and the TV's upconvert mechanism, which I thought was meant to smooth out these things, doesn't seem to make any difference at all.

Now, I've read many reviews on this TV, and I know many owners are happy (In fact, I'd love to swing by 'srjaynes' house in my local Beaverton to see what has him so pumped up). I'm willing to accept the idea that I might have set something up incorrectly, so I'll share my basic set up with you and make myself open to suggestions. Here they are:

1. Newer house, good coax to set-top box; never had any problems with ghosting, snow, or anything with standard TV - ever.

2. New component video cable (from Comcast) from set-top box to TV.

3. Switched 'output to TV' on set-top box from 480i to 480p. (Didn't change picture quality).

My email address is jvbruce@yahoo.com. I'm open to suggestions. And, 'srjaynes', if you're out there, I'd love to drive over and see how your set looks compared to mine.

Thanks,

Jim Bruce
