Love the picture! Easy to use. Super value.
Pros
Picture Quality, remote and on-screen lay-outs, easy to use/change "Day/Night" control.
Cons
Two few component inputs. No HDTV tuner. Remote not "learning" type. "Center-channel" feature is disapointing.

The Bottom Line:
I like my new Hitachi 50V500 SO much, I've decided to trade it in for the 60" set!
Fantastic picture right out of the box. Best sound I've ever heard from a TV!
Friends and family say the picture is better than my neighbors $9000 Pioneer 50" Plasma display. I compared the Hitachi side-by-side with Samsung & RCA DLT, and Sony & Panasonic LCD Rear Projection sets, in two local stores, and could NOT see an appreciable difference in the pictures. I went with the Hitachi due to great financing (0% interest and $0.00 payments for one year), and over $1000.00 savings.
The remote is great for a "factory" TV remote, but lacks some refinements for a true "universal remote".
This set allows you to use the TV's excellent speakers for the center-channel pre-amp output from your receiver. For some reason, this sounds muddy and subdued in my setup. The internal sound sounds fantastic. I don't understand why this works poorly in my configuration.
All-in-all, I'm extremely happy with my purchase from Video Only retail store in near-by Beaverton, OR. Nice folks.
No TV set I can afford is perfect, so here's my wish-list if anyone from Hitachi is listening:
1) Needs a Learning-remote. The interface with my Comcast HDTV set-top box sucks and in spite of the manual claiming control of my Sony receiver, about the only thing that works is "On" and "Off". A learning remote would probably satisfy all my remote control needs.
To be fair, the 50V500 has "IR Network" capabilities, but it's WAY to complicated for the casual reader (read my wife and daughters).
I guess I'll have to investigate the Philips LCD programmable remote....
2) AT LEAST THREE component inputs. Four would be great.
3) Built-in HTDV tuner. I didn't think I'd need this, but since Comcast has not completed the local broadcast channel line-up (especially CBS), I'd probably use it until the channels are all available via cable. My neighborhood association prohibits roof-top antennae, so I'd have to hide one in the attic. Still I could have watched the Super Bowl in HDTV yesterday if I'd had a built-in HDTV tuner and my wife could see CSI in HDTV each week.
4) The Center-Channel feature needs refined. Sound is muddy with my Sony ES444 receiver.
BTW - Hitachi's web site is informative, having very detailed animations of the technology and the benefits to the customer.
