The Bottom Line:  You want the best HDTV experience you can get right now, buy a Hitachi. This LCD projection TV is well engineered and classy.
The Hitachi LCD Projection TV is one of the first HDTV ready sets that has a great picture right out of the box. The picture can be even better with just a little fine tuning.

Throw away most of the things you've heard about LCD projection TV. Start with this. Most people are familiar with LCD panels on computers. These generally range between .22 and .49 in dot pitch size. The Hitachi weighs in at .08. So at the extreme high definition picture it is crystal clear.

Attaching peripherals is well thought out. There are five video in slots: One includes DVI or Component video. One includes component video, the rest include S Video. Plus two separate RF antennas can be connected to the set for a total of 7 inputs. And switching between them is simple. Push one button on the remote and you've got a new video source.

The upconversion on this set is even more impressive. One of the bad things about HDTV is analog signals look bad. But not with the Hitachi. Every signal can be upconverted to 480Progressive (DVD quality) or 1040I. Standard Definition TV looks just like a DVD.

Hitachi has also thought of simplifying things for the user. This set comes with a remote and an AV system which allows the TV to control every other component. Want your TV to turn on with your AV Receiver and your Cable box. You can set them all up together. With on screen display of what you're doing. It comes with enough to control four other devices. And codes are there for just about everything you can think of.

This TV changes the way you watch TV. It changes the entire experience. The picture is so stunning that you actually feel "drawn into" the image. It becomes almost 3 dimensional. Backgrounds fade into the distance. You see the shelves on sitcoms. You see the fabric on a hockey game.

There are a couple of words of caution. This set uses a projection bulb similar to a video projector. That mercury bulb will burn out, eventually. It's going to be cheaper than a picture tube, but still a couple hundred bucks to replace.

You're also going to need a stand. The Hitachi stand fits the TV perfectly and would be recommended. It's not cheap. $400. But it does fit the set, and it does make the entire presentation look right.
