Short lamp life, poor customer support
Pros
Looks great, lots of inputs, nice picture.
Cons
short lamp life, expensive replacement lamps.
Recommended it?
No
The Bottom Line:
If you want to spend $2000 for replacing lamps for the next 10 years, this is the TV for you! Otherwise, run away from it.
When I bought this TV in February 2005 for $5000 (Canadian), I thought that I was going to have trouble-free HDTV viewing for at least 10 years. Previous experience from Hitachi has shown me that they make a reliable product (usually).
I was quite happy with the set until last night, when the lamp just simply went out. No HDTV, on must-see-TV night no less!
I contacted the store where I bought it, that's where I found out about the limited warranty on the lamp and it's price, $381!!! After taxes, it would be over $400 (Canadian).
The lamp didn't even last two years! If I would have known when I bought this TV, that I'd be replacing a $400 lamp every 2 years, I wouldn't have dropped the $5000 for it. I called Hitachi Canada, and made it very clear that I was not pleased. I asked if it was reasonable to think that a customer would spend $2000 over 10 years just to replace a light bulb? The guy had no comment.
So I gave them an ultimatum. Either sell me a lamp at $99 or buy back my TV - 20% of purchase price. (Based on I figured at least 10 years of service, and I only got 2)
I gave them one business day to respond (Monday afternoon). I'll report on the results then.
