The Bottom Line:
Bottom line is I got the best picture I found at a price I wanted to pay. That should be your bottom line also.
Like most people, I am not an expert at televisions. This fact causes us to have to do quite a bit of research before you buy. I will try to help you determine what is important to you and why I bought this particular model.
Are features important to you, or do you just want the best picture available?
I went for picture only, and features were secondary. Go to Circuit City and adjust the contrast, brightness and color settings on the sets you are interested in. Don't let the salesman rush you. You will find that the Hitachi stands out among all others. Let your eyes be the judge. This model boasts a "high brightness CRT" and they mean it. I turned down the contrast and brightness settings to about 33% on the television once it was delivered to my home. That to me means this CRT will last a long time. You might find a higher setting looks best to you, but I can't imagine anyone setting them past 50%. I have an analog cable TV input and the picture is stunning. You don't need a HDTV signal to enjoy the HDTV quality.
Do you need surround sound, or will that be handled by your stereo?
If you do, Hitachi makes a SWX line that can handle the surround, otherwise this UWX model saves you $$$. The alternative also is to buy this model and use the savings to get a decent surround stereo.
This UWX model does have surround, but it is "SRS" surround, and uses the two speakers in the television to simulate surround sound, or it can "enhance" a multi-speaker system hooked up to a stereo. I find it more than adequate for watching regular television programming. I use my surround sound amplifier for cable and DVD movies.
The Hitachi uses "Magic Focus 4-Sensor Auto Digital Convergence" to adjust the set. One press of a button and that's it. You really only need to use this feature whenever the set is moved or bumped. Otherwise you might not care too much about this feature unless you plan to move the television around every once in a while.
The Hitachi remote is one of the better remotes I have used. It has a thumbstick (joystick) on it and you can click it like a mouse button to select. They have included many VCR, DVD, Amplifier, cable box, CD player, and satellite receiver codes so that you can control other equipment. This is awesome! The only thing is I can't control my amplifier, only turn it on.
I won't go into input/output features but the thing to do is count how many component, SVHS, analog, or digital connections you will use and make sure it has them, but I assure you there is no shortage of connections on this set.
