BIG TV BIG VALUE

Pros Picture size and quality and value cannot be beat
Cons None. Maybe its size -- it is a big TV for a big room.
Recommended it? Yes
The Bottom Line:  Great value and great picture. With TVs like this on the market for less than $1,600 delivered, I don't understand why people spend more.
Update Nov 2008. Have had TV for nearly 2 years. 65 inch TV purchased on-line. It cost $1600.00 delivered to my basement. I still think his is the largest HDTV TV you will find without spending a small fortune. This is the ideal TV if you have a medium to large room dedicated to TV watching.

The CRT projection picture is bright, fast and sharp. It is 1080i. You may be able to get a 1080p TV and use it with BlueRay or Dish Satelite, but I saw no difference between the 1080i TVs and the 1080p TVs, and satelite still suffers more from digital artifacts. When viewing sports there is none of the blurring that you find with comparatively priced LCD, DLP or any plasma TV. I looked at dozens of TVs and I could not find a better quality picture. Plus, unlike LCD and DLP TVs you will never have to replace a $300 projector light bulb in this TV, a chore my friend has had to do twice with his DLP.

It up converts 720p input to 1080i or downcoverts to 540p and it deals well with noisy low definition digital or analog pictures. There is slight loss of clarity on 720p HD pictures.

Contrary to what another reviewer said this TV HAS a great digital tuner that receives 1080I pictures in native format. It is the 720P off the air picture that must be converted to 1080i or 520P by the TV's electronics. Whatever, you get beautiful high definition pictures from both formats on this TV. And you get all the digital and analog off the air channels that are now available. Plus this TV will still get the low power analog repeater signals that will still be around after 2/2009 in rural areas. No converter box, analog pass thrus needed. For local channels, the off the air high def picture is as good as it gets, and is better than the high def picture delivered by cable or the satelite systems. So, I cancelled my local channels from the satelite and saved some $.

Set up is easy and the manual is easy to understand. There are enough high def component video inputs for anyone. There are both analog and digital audio digital outputs to go to a digital audio reciever. There is only one HDMI input, so a sound receiver with HDMI switches is a great idea.

This TV is easy to set up for digital surround sound. I use the TV's video switch to switch between a DVD player in progressive mode ,a DVD recorder, a VCR, and the satellite recorder.  It has 2 sets of component inputs, a s-video input and an hdmi input.

There is no cable card so if you have cable or satellite you will always need a box. HDMI is flaky out of box. TV went black after about 30 minutes until I entered service codes found on Internet. Search "Hitachi F59 HDMI fix". HDMI compatiblity has been an issue for many cable and satellite boxes and TVs. HDMI is not all it is cracked up to be, search for HDMI problems on Internet.  The fix will get rid of the blank screen, but noone hasn been able to get rid of the once in a blue moon HDMI shift, that many TVs seem to have.  When this occurs the picture shifts left for a second, just enough to shove the left black bar on a standard def picture off the screen.

Bottom line, everyone who has watched this thing has been impressed, to the point where there is some annoyance when I tell them what I paid for it. 65 inches, High Def, no bulbs to burn out.
