The Bottom Line:
I recommend this video camera.
After my son was born, my husband and I decided it was time to buy a video camera to record all of those precious moments and milestones. We consulted Consumer Reports and the internet, and headed to Circuit City. We were torn between the Hitachi and another model, but ultimately decided on the Hitachi for a variety of reasons.
First, it uses DVDs, a must in our eyes. The videos can be transferred to a computer using the USB cord, but you can also finalize the DVD and play it in any DVD player. We tend to copy the files to the pc and reuse the DVDs as they can get pricey.
It is compact, but fits comfortably in both my small hand and my husband's larger hand. Other models we looked at fit my hand fine but were small in his, or were bulky in my hand.
The in-camera editing software is easy to use.
Negatives: The quality on stills is not great, and videos in indoor light come out dark. We bought a cheap light that goes on top and that helps some, but you still need very bright light or daylight for the videos to be well lit.
The Lithium battery doesn't last very long, I need to make sure to charge it in between uses.
